Objective<br />
To change people’s attitudes, behaviour and actions f<strong>or</strong><br />
road safety and wise use <strong>of</strong> roads and vehicles with the<br />
mission to promote road safety, facilitate implementation<br />
and reduce enf<strong>or</strong>cement activities.<br />
(c)<br />
<strong>Policy</strong> Directions<br />
• The Government shall develop and implement<br />
communication, educational and public awareness<br />
campaign programmes that will disseminate this policy<br />
and the other road safety strategies to be understood<br />
by the public;<br />
• The Government shall create and maintain full political<br />
attention and supp<strong>or</strong>t to the road safety sect<strong>or</strong> as<br />
a reflection <strong>of</strong> the high value that the leaders and<br />
communities place on human beings and human life;<br />
• The Government shall make increased eff<strong>or</strong>ts to promote<br />
awareness about the road safety issues, and their socioeconomic<br />
implications;<br />
• The Government shall introduce public acceptance and<br />
response to road safety measures.<br />
5.3.2 <strong>Road</strong> safety education f<strong>or</strong> children<br />
Children are extremely vulnerable in road traffic environment and<br />
need basic skills to behave safely. While education as a theme<br />
runs across all elements <strong>of</strong> road safety eff<strong>or</strong>t, there is a particular<br />
requirement f<strong>or</strong> increased education and training <strong>of</strong> children.<br />
There is a need to build on current education eff<strong>or</strong>ts and promote<br />
education as a key catalyst and enabler <strong>of</strong> safer people, safer roads<br />
and safer vehicles. Education and the provision <strong>of</strong> inf<strong>or</strong>mation is<br />
a standout item throughout the engagement process. However,<br />
err<strong>or</strong>s play a most imp<strong>or</strong>tant role in most road crashes. Measures<br />
to improve road safety must, theref<strong>or</strong>e, in the first instance be<br />
directed at increasing the knowledge and modifying the attitude<br />
and behaviour <strong>of</strong> the road user. M<strong>or</strong>eover, in the long term, a proper<br />
road safety education <strong>of</strong> children will ensure that they have some<br />
