Passport addresses misconceptions and stereotypes about Africa and Africans. Each 60-minute session and follow-up classroom activities presented in the Educator’s Guide address Sunshine State Standards including Language Arts (writing, listening, viewing and speaking), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. 24

This project involves experiential learning activities that provide students with in-school support from performers in FGO’s Young Artist Studio, online resources, and an opportunity to attend a performance at the Broward Center. The In-School Opera Program meets Sunshine State Standards for Music in grades 9-12, especially in the areas of (C) Cultural and Historical Connections (the student understands music in relation to culture and history), and (D) Aesthetic and Critical Analysis (the student listens to, analyzes, describes and evaluates music and music performance.) Through performances and classroom visits, the ensemble will help students develop an understanding of four powerful women who helped shape African American culture and history – novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, ex-slave and abolitionist Sojourner Truth, folk artist Clementine Hunter, and civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer. The musical score is drawn from the spirituals and blues of the Deep South, the Jazz Age, and concert music by African Americans.
