The 2010 Barber of Seville Student Outreach Initiative utilizes an opera’s plot, characters and storyline to deepen <strong>the</strong> understanding of academics and<br />

promote character development. This project involves experiential learning activities that provide students with in-school support from per<strong>for</strong>mers<br />

in FGO’s Young Artist Studio, online resources, and an opportunity to attend a per<strong>for</strong>mance at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Broward</strong> <strong>Center</strong>. The In-School Opera<br />

Program meets Sunshine State Standards <strong>for</strong> Music in grades 9-12, especially in <strong>the</strong> areas of (C) Cultural and Historical Connections (<strong>the</strong> student<br />

understands music in relation to culture and history), and (D) Aes<strong>the</strong>tic and Critical Analysis (<strong>the</strong> student listens to, analyzes, describes and<br />

evaluates music and music per<strong>for</strong>mance.) Approximately 2,600 students across five <strong>Broward</strong> <strong>County</strong> high schools will be served by this project.<br />

The Core Ensemble (cello, piano and percussion) will present Ain’t I A Woman – A Celebration of African- American Women. Through per<strong>for</strong>mances<br />

and classroom visits, <strong>the</strong> ensemble will help students develop an understanding of four powerful women who helped shape African American culture<br />

and history – novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, ex-slave and abolitionist Sojourner Truth, folk artist Clementine Hunter, and civil rights<br />

worker Fannie Lou Hamer. The musical score is drawn from <strong>the</strong> spirituals and blues of <strong>the</strong> Deep South, <strong>the</strong> Jazz Age, and concert music by African<br />

Americans. The programs will integrate standards in Language Arts, Social Studies, Visual Arts and Music.<br />

Write a Play is an arts-in-education initiative which provides students with <strong>the</strong> skills and inspiration to write plays and submit <strong>the</strong>m <strong>for</strong> consideration to<br />

Florida Studio Theatre’s Young Playwrights Festival. Using high-energy, interactive per<strong>for</strong>mances and workshops, Write a Play provides students with<br />

exercises in critical and creative thinking while promoting literacy and streng<strong>the</strong>ning language and communication skills.<br />
