The following programs are offered by the Broward County
Cultural Division through partnerships with various entities such as the
Cultural Foundation of Broward, the Broward Center for the Performing
Arts, The School Board of Broward County, and the Kennedy
Center’s Partners in Education Program:

2009 ARTS TEACHER OF THE YEAR
ARTS TEACHERS ARE CHANGING LIVES
Susan Anderson
National Board Certified Teacher,
Early Adolescence through Young Adult Art
J.P. Taravella High School
Susan Anderson holds a bachelor of fine arts in education/
ceramics from Florida Atlantic University; is a studio art major
from the School of Visual Arts in New York City; and is board
certified in Early Adolescence through Young Adult Art with the
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She has taught
at J.P. Taravella High School for more than 15 years and has
worked as a summer instructor with art programs at both the
Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern
University and the Boca Raton Museum of Art.
“I guide students to work through their troubles by producing art.
I hold a fundamental belief in the education of the whole child,” says
Anderson, who holds professional memberships from Florida Arts
Educators Association; Broward County Teacher’s Guild; National
Arts Educator’s Association; Broward Art Guild; Broward Art
Educator Association and Palm Beach Photographic Society. She has
promoted and instituted many innovative activities and projects at
J.P. Taravella High School including, Pinwheels for Peace, Think Art,
and Shared Inspirations, just to name a few. Anderson says,
“opening minds to new information and ideas, while opening
hearts to creative expression is one of my major goals.”
TEACHERS – TO APPLY FOR 2010
Applications will be mailed to all school principals in September
2009. The application will also be available on the Broward
Cultural Division’s website (www.broward.org/arts) in September.
THE EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY
DEVELOPMENT (ECD) GRANT PROGRAM
A grant program of up to $30,000 awarded annually to cities,
organizations and artists to implement after-school and summer
arts education projects throughout Broward County.
ARTS EDUCATION ONLINE DIRECTORY
This directory is a resource for the community listing information about
teaching artists that provide outreach arts services in Broward County.
FAMILY ARTS AND RIDE GUIDE
This partnership publication between Broward Cultural Division and
the Office of Transportation is a comprehensive listing of organizations
that offer arts programming for families, listed by name, location, phone
number and website. A full-scale map is also available that has bus
fares plotted and major thoroughfares, as well as cultural facilities
that offer family arts programming.
ARTS TEACHER OF THE YEAR PROGRAM
Each year, one outstanding arts educator is honored at a gala award
ceremony and performance at the Broward Center for the Performing
Arts. This program was created in 1985 to publicly recognize the role
of arts teachers in Broward County schools and is funded by the
Cultural Foundation of Broward.
ANNUAL ARTS INTEGRATION PROGRAM
This program is a multi-collaborative conference of the Broward
Cultural Division, Dillard Center for the Arts, The School Board of
Broward County, FL, Broward Center for the Performing Arts and
the Kennedy Center’s Partners in Education Program. Each year more
than seventeen arts integration workshops are presented to artists,
classroom teachers, principals, and community arts providers.
The presenters are highly-skilled, nationally-recognized arts integration
experts from Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ roster, along
with local teaching artists and university faculty. Studying with them in
this “master class” format is a rare opportunity for Broward teachers.
