The following programs are offered by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Broward</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

Cultural Division through partnerships with various entities such as <strong>the</strong><br />

Cultural Foundation of <strong>Broward</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Broward</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Per<strong>for</strong>ming<br />

Arts, The School Board of <strong>Broward</strong> <strong>County</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> Kennedy<br />

<strong>Center</strong>’s Partners in Education Program:<br />

2009 ARTS TEACHER OF THE YEAR<br />

ARTS TEACHERS ARE CHANGING LIVES<br />

Susan Anderson<br />

National Board Certified Teacher,<br />

Early Adolescence through Young Adult Art<br />

J.P. Taravella High School<br />

Susan Anderson holds a bachelor of fine arts in education/<br />

ceramics from Florida Atlantic University; is a studio art major<br />

from <strong>the</strong> School of Visual Arts in New York City; and is board<br />

certified in Early Adolescence through Young Adult Art with <strong>the</strong><br />

National Board <strong>for</strong> Professional Teaching Standards. She has taught<br />

at J.P. Taravella High School <strong>for</strong> more than 15 years and has<br />

worked as a summer instructor with art programs at both <strong>the</strong><br />

Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Sou<strong>the</strong>astern<br />

University and <strong>the</strong> Boca Raton Museum of Art.<br />

“I guide students to work through <strong>the</strong>ir troubles by producing art.<br />

I hold a fundamental belief in <strong>the</strong> education of <strong>the</strong> whole child,” says<br />

Anderson, who holds professional memberships from Florida Arts<br />

Educators Association; <strong>Broward</strong> <strong>County</strong> Teacher’s Guild; National<br />

Arts Educator’s Association; <strong>Broward</strong> Art Guild; <strong>Broward</strong> Art<br />

Educator Association and Palm Beach Photographic Society. She has<br />

promoted and instituted many innovative activities and projects at<br />

J.P. Taravella High School including, Pinwheels <strong>for</strong> Peace, Think Art,<br />

and Shared Inspirations, just to name a few. Anderson says,<br />

“opening minds to new in<strong>for</strong>mation and ideas, while opening<br />

hearts to creative expression is one of my major goals.”<br />

TEACHERS – TO APPLY FOR 2010<br />

Applications will be mailed to all school principals in September<br />

2009. The application will also be available on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Broward</strong><br />

Cultural Division’s website (www.broward.org/arts) in September.<br />

THE EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY<br />

DEVELOPMENT (ECD) GRANT PROGRAM<br />

A grant program of up to $30,000 awarded annually to cities,<br />

organizations and artists to implement after-school and summer<br />

arts education projects throughout <strong>Broward</strong> <strong>County</strong>.<br />

ARTS EDUCATION ONLINE DIRECTORY<br />

This directory is a resource <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> community listing in<strong>for</strong>mation about<br />

teaching artists that provide outreach arts services in <strong>Broward</strong> <strong>County</strong>.<br />

FAMILY ARTS AND RIDE GUIDE<br />

This partnership publication between <strong>Broward</strong> Cultural Division and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Office of Transportation is a comprehensive listing of organizations<br />

that offer arts programming <strong>for</strong> families, listed by name, location, phone<br />

number and website. A full-scale map is also available that has bus<br />

fares plotted and major thoroughfares, as well as cultural facilities<br />

that offer family arts programming.<br />

ARTS TEACHER OF THE YEAR PROGRAM<br />

Each year, one outstanding arts educator is honored at a gala award<br />

ceremony and per<strong>for</strong>mance at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Broward</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Per<strong>for</strong>ming<br />

Arts. This program was created in 1985 to publicly recognize <strong>the</strong> role<br />

of arts teachers in <strong>Broward</strong> <strong>County</strong> schools and is funded by <strong>the</strong><br />

Cultural Foundation of <strong>Broward</strong>.<br />

ANNUAL ARTS INTEGRATION PROGRAM<br />

This program is a multi-collaborative conference of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Broward</strong><br />

Cultural Division, Dillard <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arts, The School Board of<br />

<strong>Broward</strong> <strong>County</strong>, FL, <strong>Broward</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Per<strong>for</strong>ming Arts and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Kennedy <strong>Center</strong>’s Partners in Education Program. Each year more<br />

than seventeen arts integration workshops are presented to artists,<br />

classroom teachers, principals, and community arts providers.<br />

The presenters are highly-skilled, nationally-recognized arts integration<br />

experts from Kennedy <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Per<strong>for</strong>ming Arts’ roster, along<br />

with local teaching artists and university faculty. Studying with <strong>the</strong>m in<br />

this “master class” <strong>for</strong>mat is a rare opportunity <strong>for</strong> <strong>Broward</strong> teachers.<br />
