In today’s technological world of rapid change, glamorous celebrities and sports stars make the likes of Benjamin Franklin seem an old
bore, while a generation of students born after the Civil Rights Movement must be taught about it in school. Storytelling and historical
portrayal can make history jump off the written page. This workshop will explore historical people and topics, plus dress, housing,
work, food, transportation, etc., of their times, which will serve as springboards to demonstrate how students can read, research,
write and retell the stories in vignettes, plays and monologues that turn “then” into “now.”
that will reinforce the lesson and strengthen the memory. This process requires High Order Thinking Skills like those demanded in the
FCATS, yet, unlike taking a test, it becomes a fun, challenging activity that integrates listening, rhyming, speaking, rhythmic and vocabulary
