From the President of the Broward Center Dear Educators, I am delighted to welcome you and your students to another exciting season of educational programs and performances at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. As many of you know, busloads of students arrive here nearly every school day as part of the SEAS program, an award-winning educational partnership with Broward County Public Schools. As we enter our 19th season, we hope that you will find once again that the offerings of the SEAS program will give your students unique learning opportunities that enrich and enhance their experiences in the classroom. Literature-based shows. Science and math productions. Dramatizations of key historical events. An immersion into the music, dance and traditions of different cultures. Our SEAS program offers vibrant shows covering themes that reinforce classroom learning, directly aligned with FCAT topics and the core curriculum. You’ll find that reading-based performances are highlighted throughout the year, as the SEAS program brings literature to life on stage. Each year, we also offer a wide variety of professional development opportunities for educators designed to complement and reinforce teaching techniques, including Cultural Adventures for Teachers, Workshops-to-Go, Discover Broadway, SEAS Plus and Teachers’ Lounge. We hope you’ll take advantage of these engaging workshops and master classes. In May 2009, the SEAS partnership was recognized by the Broward Alliance with its prestigious “Educational Excellence Builds Business Partnership Award” for integrating arts, drama and a visual style of learning into our students’ lives and their education. A growing body of research demonstrates that learning through the arts helps our students to achieve at higher levels, giving them valuable skills to succeed, from creativity and improved literacy to higher levels of motivation and enhanced cognitive development. Whether learning science concepts or multi-cultural traditions, SEAS performances help to make learning fun. Connecting the arts to academic lessons is a proven strategy that helps close the achievement gap and bring learning to life, advancing our shared goal to “educate the whole child”. As President/CEO of the Broward Center, and as the father of three, I’ve had the opportunity to witness firsthand the significant impact of our education programs on our students, teachers and the community. In these challenging economic times, I am especially pleased that this partnership continues to flourish. We hope you will take advantage of these unique learning tools by making the SEAS program part of your lesson plan in the coming year.
