This exhibition features over 200 vintage prints from the Conde Nast archives and includes bold and engaging portraits of Gary Cooper, Gloria Swanson, Henri Matisse, George Bernard Shaw, Fred Astaire Igor Stravinsky, Winston Churchill and many others. Imagine the excitement a young boy would find along Fort Lauderdale’s New River at the turn of the last century! Frank Stranahan’s trading post (circa 1901) on the northern bank was the hub of activity. While Seminoles gathered on the shady porches to trade their otter hides and gator eggs, Frank’s wife, Ivy (the area’s first school teacher), taught the young Seminole children to read. Storytelling: Mitchell’s Magical Day with Frank & Ivy Stranahan brings the colorful history of Fort Lauderdale to life for young readers through tales of historical fiction. Participants will tour the Stranahan House Museum, have ‘hands on’ experiences and will engage in interactive storytelling using the book, Mitchell’s Magical Day with Frank & Ivy Stranahan. Broward County Public Schools elementary sites use these books as a supplement to the social studies curriculum; copies of the text were provided to elementary schools as a gift from Stranahan House through state and local grants.
