vSA Arts Performances THE PIED PIPER AND OTHER FANTASTIC TALES Donna Wissinger Grade Level: K-2, Special Needs Curriculum: Language Arts/Math/Music/Science/Theater Standards: LA.C.2.1.1 LA.C.1.1.1 MU.D.1.1.4 TH.E.1.1.2 MA.D.1.1.1 SC.A.1.1.1 Dates: October 12-16, 2009 Time: Two (1-hour) shows Place: Your school Renowned storyteller and flutist Donna Wissinger partners with a lively story bag to mesmerize and enthrall young readers. Students laugh and learn as the story bag helps Donna tell the musical stories of The Pied Piper, Pocahontas, Pan and Syrinx, and The Lone Ranger. Students’ imaginations soar as they find they can understand a magical creature speaking only in music, their natural curiosity is rewarded as math and science explain the sounds of the different flutes found in the stories, and the story bag shows how words and stories are full of great adventures. The course teaches techniques in improvisations, movement and music. With fun exercises, the special needs actor is given the opportunity to express ideas and feelings. The program enhances verbal skills, improves movement, builds self-confidence and advances socialization while stimulating free thinking. Actors and volunteers pick the themes and write the scripts for their year-end performance. 89898989898989898989898989898989898989898989898989898989 THE COPPELIA PROJECT Lawrence Arts Center Grade Level: 3-5 Curriculum: Language Arts/Social Studies/Theater Standards: LA.C.1.2.2 LA.E.1.2.1 LA.E.1.2.2 SS.A.2.2.2 TH.C.1.2.1 FCAT Topic: Fables, Stories, Legends Dates: January 5-8, 2010 Times: 10:00 and 11:30 AM (1 hour show) Place: Broward Center (Amaturo Theater), 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312 The Coppelia Project, which has been touring as part of the Accessible Arts Program, explores issues of perfection, acceptance, and tolerance. As an inventor, Dr. Coppelius brings three clown ballerinas to life but is ultimately unhappy with his creations. A young boy acts as a foil to the Dr., discovering the unique qualities of each, including one actress whose actual physical disability is showcased to illustrate the lesson that we must accept people as they are, overcome obstacles and celebrate the uniqueness of us all. 89898989898989898989898989898989898989898989898989898989 VSA ARTS OF FLORIDA PROGRAM OUTCOMES: 1. FLORIDA GRAND OPERA EVENING SHOWS Suor Angelica & Pagliacci Dates: December 3 and 5, 2009 Time; 8:00 PM Place: Broward Center for the Performing Arts (Au-Rene) PROGRAM I Miami City Ballet Dates: November 6-8, 2009 Time: 8:00 PM Place: Broward Center for the Performing Arts (Au-Rene) The season starts with the Paul Taylor hit Company B where World War ll songs contrast with the melancholy realities of soldiers at war, plus Ballanchine’s Allegro Brillante. PROGRAM II Miami City Ballet Dates: January 22-24, 2010 Time: 8:00 PM Place: Broward Center for the Performing Arts (Au-Rene) Program II includes Balanchine’s brilliant Valse Fantaisis and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue plus the Twyla Tharp/David Byrne collaboration The Golden Section. PROGRAM III Miami City Ballet Dates: February 13-15, 2010 Time: 8:00 PM Place: Broward Center for the Performing Arts (Au-Rene) It’s Broadway meets ballet when Edward Villella’s first full evening-length work The Neighborhood Ballroom hits the stage. PROGRAM IV Miami City Ballet Dates: March 12-14, 2010 Time: 8:00 PM Place: Broward Center for the Performing Arts (Au-Rene) The Jerome Robbins masterpiece Dances at a Gathering and Balanchine classic Who Cares? are both original celebrations of dance, dancers…and life. Florida Grand Opera launches its Broward County mainstage season with a double-bill of two wonderful one-act operas, Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Leoncavallo’s popular Pagliacci. Lucia di Lammermoor Dates: February 4 and 6, 2010 Time; 8:00 PM Place: Broward Center for the Performing Arts (Au-Rene) Florida Grand Opera stages Donizetti’s Lucia di, one of the greatest Italian bel canto operas, requiring singers with extraordinary technical vocal accomplishment in the tradition of Maria Callas. The Barber of Seville Dates: March 4 and 6, 2010 Time; 8:00 PM Place: Broward Center for the Performing Arts (Au-Rene) Among the most cherished comic operas of all time, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville contains many memorable works, including Figaro’s “Largo al factotum.” Carmen Dates: May 13 and 15, 2010 Time; 8:00 PM Place: Broward Center for the Performing Arts (Au-Rene) Bizet’s Carmen, arguably one of the most popular operatic masterpieces of all time, closes Florida Grand Opera’s glorious 2009-2010 season. STARS ON PARADE Broward County Schools Date: April 15, 2010 Time: 7:30 PM (2 hour show) Place: Broward Center for the Performing Arts (Amaturo) The Broward Center is the scene of an exciting extravaganza showcasing outstanding high school performers from the Broward School District in the area of dance, vocals and music. The highlight will be the presentation of the 2010 Arts for the Future Scholarships, presented on the Amaturo stage to fifty seniors who are planning to pursue the arts in their advanced studies. 27
