Promoting Fruits and Vegetables<br />
•Track foods on 5 A Day Cards.<br />
– Use the cards on Appendix pages 44 and 45 to have students track the<br />
fruits and vegetables they eat at breakfast and lunch. You can download the<br />
cards from www.5ADay.org.<br />
– Stamp the student’s card every day, and at the end of the week have<br />
students turn in their cards for a prize.<br />
– Give bigger prizes for students who eat at least 5 servings a day at school.<br />
Reward students for<br />
trying new fruits and<br />
vegetables.<br />
•Create “Lucky Sticker Day.”<br />
–Young children love stickers. When they try new fruits and vegetables,<br />
reward them with a sticker.<br />
– Or to add excitement to the serving line—put stickers on some of the salad<br />
plates or fruit and vegetable containers, and give small prizes to the lucky<br />
students who get them.<br />
• Give “Pencils for Learning.”<br />
–Plan a word game that features fruits and vegetables.<br />
– Give out special pencils to students who play the game.<br />
• Hold a Poster Contest.<br />
– Challenge elementary school classes to have a poster contest.<br />
– The winning class gets a private party in the cafeteria with tablecloths<br />
and decorations.<br />

• Invite a Special Visitor.<br />
– Ask a celebrity to dine with your<br />
students (college or high school athlete<br />
for elementary schools) .<br />
– Have a costumed mascot visit the<br />
cafeteria. A staff member or parent<br />
volunteer can wear the costume to<br />
get students excited about eating<br />
fruits and vegetables.<br />
– The costume for Power Panther, the<br />
Eat Smart. Play Hard. TM spokes-character,<br />
is available to schools to use<br />
free of charge.
