A truer picture of income emerges if the participant wages are omitted, which
represents a transfer of wages from FÁS to the organisation (Cork Academy and Togher
Music Project) to workers on Community Employment schemes, and is not a source
of income for the organisation. The effect of this is to reduce income by over 50%, or
almost €330,000. Grant income continues to dominate, but fundraising (18%) and
income from fees/performances (17%) are relatively important.
Grant Income
The relative importance of all grant income sources is shown in the table below. FÁS
Community Employment grants, at 60.5%, are the dominant income source. This
income accrues to the two full­time programmes and is used primarily to pay wages for the
supervisor positions. Materials, insurance and participant training are also included.
Instruments can be purchased with the materials allocation and music tutors are among
those paid from the participant training budget.
Education grants in the form of Vocational Education Committee (VEC) hours and the
Back to Education Initiative (BTEI) account for 12.2% of income. The VEC pays music
tutors for the hours they teach in the part­time music programmes and the BTEI grant
pays for FETAC (Further Education and Training Awards Council) non­music courses in
Cork Academy of Music.
