Organisations in
Cork City 2006 to 2009
5.1. Introduction:
This section summarises the main developments in the community music organisations
and groups from 2006 to 2009. It also introduces the Cork Community Music Network,
the work that it has carried out and the challenges it faces.
Research for this section was carried out through interviews with the organisations and
groups. This evaluation reinforces how tenuous is the sustainability of the community
organisations and groups. It also describes the advances they have made, and the
struggles and challenges they still face.
5.2. Cork Community Music Network
The Cork Community Music Network emerged in early 2006 during the carrying out of
research for this report. The Network was initially supported by the Social Inclusion Unit
at Cork City Council, and shortly afterwards received funding for a training programme

from The Wheel.
That training programme helped the Network to move forward. Some of the training
undertaken in 2006 and 2007 has been extended into 2009. In 2006/7 training included:
a course on methods of instruction for teachers, composition for
performance, the use of the computer notation programme Sibelius,
a brass masterclass, performance in a social and healthcare setting and
a Jazz Summer School. An evaluation was carried out after the year which
showed that much was achieved for the €20,000 funding received.
The Wheel has extended some of its support this year and the Network has

Established in 1999, The Wheel has evolved to become a resource centre and forum for the community and voluntary sector.
