provides employment for 14 teachers, four of whom came through a FÁS scheme in the
school, went on to university and came back as teachers. Part of the income from the
fees subsidises events in the community centre.
Barrack Street Band
Barrack Street Band is still providing its outreach programme to primary schools and
continuing to teach theory and the playing of brass and reed instruments to children.
The band has sustained its teaching programmes and is still very active. In November
2008 the band travelled to Flanders in Belgium for the Ceremonial World War I
Commemoration.
There are two main developments in relation to the band’s teaching programmes. From
2009 it will be teaching primary children basic instrumentation in groups instead of
one to one tuition. This will maximise the band’s resources and also provide a more
creative and enjoyable method for the children. Secondly, in 2008 the band started an
outreach music programme for adults, similar to that offered by the Cork Academy
of Music. The programme is giving 12 adults the opportunity to learn music. This
programme was supported and developed through the band’s involvement in the Cork
Community Music Network and is supported through the Cork Academy of Music. This
