jashekar, Mr. Francis Jayakanth <strong>and</strong> Mr. Madhuresh S<strong>in</strong>ghal. As <strong>for</strong> as the software option<br />

was concerned, <strong>in</strong> 2002 there weren’t many options, GNU EPr<strong>in</strong>ts.org was perhaps<br />

the only FOSS software meant <strong>for</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g IRs.<br />

In 2003, UNESCO <strong>in</strong>vited Dr Rajasekhar <strong>to</strong> speak on open access <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong>.<br />

<strong>to</strong>ry, GNU EPr<strong>in</strong>ts.org software 80<br />

is be<strong>in</strong>g used right from the<br />

n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> it is serv<strong>in</strong>g the needs of<br />

our <strong>in</strong>stitutional reposi<strong>to</strong>ry very<br />

well. To date, more than 26,000<br />

publications of IISc have been<br />

loaded <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the reposi<strong>to</strong>ry of<br />

which, more than 75 per cent of<br />

uploads have the correspond<strong>in</strong>g<br />

full-texts. Figure 1 shows the<br />

screenshot of ePr<strong>in</strong>ts@IISc homepage.<br />

Initially, several technical value additions were <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> the reposi<strong>to</strong>ry. These<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude cus<strong>to</strong>mization of the homepage, display<strong>in</strong>g of record count <strong>in</strong> the homepage,<br />

play<strong>in</strong>g of recent additions <strong>to</strong> the reposi<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>in</strong> the homepage, scripts <strong>for</strong> import<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cords from Web of Sciences, arXiv.org <strong>and</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Village database, scripts <strong>for</strong><br />

erat<strong>in</strong>g browse views <strong>for</strong> the ‘keywords’ metadata field, cus<strong>to</strong>miz<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

ate_views’ script <strong>for</strong> generat<strong>in</strong>g alphabetical list<strong>in</strong>g of author names, scripts <strong>for</strong> generat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

usage statistics, etc. Most of the said cus<strong>to</strong>mizations have been <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> the<br />

later versions of GNU EPr<strong>in</strong>ts.org software.<br />

For the last 10 years, the average upload rate is about 85 per<br />

cent. Sadly, self-archiv<strong>in</strong>g is almost nil. All the upload<strong>in</strong>g is done<br />

at NCSI. Another problem concerns upload<strong>in</strong>g legacy papers;<br />

uniquely identify<strong>in</strong>g the author names is still a problem. We have<br />

not found a solution <strong>for</strong> this issue yet. There are issues with the<br />

age report<strong>in</strong>g package as well. We are not mak<strong>in</strong>g any attempt <strong>to</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>d solution <strong>for</strong> the above issues. Hopefully, the newer versions of<br />

GNU EPr<strong>in</strong>ts will take care of these issues. Future plans <strong>for</strong> the reposi<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>in</strong>clude adherence<br />
