Prof. Brahmachari also conceived<br />
OSDD (<strong>Open</strong> SourceDrug Discovery), a<br />
CSIR-led <strong>in</strong>itiative with a vision <strong>to</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g af<strong>for</strong>dable healthcare <strong>to</strong> the develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />
world. Launched on 15 September 2008, it provides a global plat<strong>for</strong>m where the best<br />
m<strong>in</strong>ds can collaborate <strong>and</strong> collectively endeavour <strong>to</strong> solve the complex problems associated<br />
with discover<strong>in</strong>g novel therapies <strong>for</strong> diseases like malaria <strong>and</strong> tuberculosis. Participat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
scientists aggregate <strong>and</strong> share the biological <strong>and</strong> genetic data available freely at<br />
<strong>Open</strong> Source Drug Discovery 100 . The Government of <strong>India</strong> has committed Rs 1,500 million<br />
(US $38 million) <strong>to</strong>wards this project. An equivalent amount of fund<strong>in</strong>g would be<br />
raised from <strong>in</strong>ternational agencies <strong>and</strong> philanthropists.<br />
INSA convened a half-day bra<strong>in</strong>s<strong>to</strong>rm<strong>in</strong>g meet on open access, FOSS <strong>and</strong> copyright<br />
law <strong>for</strong> scholarly communication <strong>and</strong> literary work on 26 April 2008. 101 The Fellows of<br />
<strong>India</strong>n Academies were urged <strong>to</strong> follow the Harvard model <strong>and</strong> adopt an open access<br />
