Master’s Degree Courses — Biblical Studies (BIST), continued<br />

6141 Greek III 3 hrs.<br />

This is second-year Greek, a study <strong>of</strong> exegetical methods for preaching and teaching. prerequisite:<br />

BIST 5440 or equivalent.<br />

6210 The Literature and History <strong>of</strong> the New Testament I 3 hrs.<br />

This course investigates Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Acts in their literary, cultural, historical,<br />

and social milieus. Special emphasis is made on developing exegetical skills appropriate for<br />

these books. Consideration is given to current exegetical issues (such as the synoptic problem, the<br />

historical Jesus, the gospels, and Acts as examples <strong>of</strong> ancient narrative) and methods (such as historical,<br />

sociological, and narrative criticisms). This course is prerequisite to BIST 6220.<br />

6220 The Literature and History <strong>of</strong> the New Testament II 3 hrs.<br />

This course investigates the epistolary books <strong>of</strong> the New Testament as well as Revelation. Special<br />

emphasis is made on developing exegetical skills appropriate for these books. Consideration is<br />

given to current exegetical issues (such as current understandings <strong>of</strong> Paul, first century letter writing,<br />

and apocalypticism) and methods (such as historical and sociological criticisms). Formerly<br />

5241 and 6050. prerequisite: BIST 6210.<br />

6231 Biblical Hebrew IV 3 hrs.<br />

This advanced-level course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> reading <strong>of</strong> selected passages <strong>of</strong> the Hebrew Bible,<br />

with special attention given to exegesis. The student will also research and write a major exegetical<br />

study <strong>of</strong> an Old Testament passage, based on the Hebrew text. prerequisite: BIST 6131.<br />

6241 Greek IV 3 hrs.<br />

This course continues second-year Greek. Refinement <strong>of</strong> exegetical methods for preaching and<br />

teaching is the purpose <strong>of</strong> this course. prerequisite: BIST 6141 or equivalent.<br />

6400 The Christian and the Old Testament <strong>Theology</strong> 3 hrs.<br />

This course is a biblical and theological study <strong>of</strong> the foundational theology applied by the Old<br />

Testament for the New Testament and the Christian church. This study identifies and inductively<br />

derives the center or focal point for the theology <strong>of</strong> both the Old and New Testaments. It<br />

also deals with the continuity and discontinuity between the Old and New Testaments. Topics<br />

included are saving faith, the people <strong>of</strong> God, the role <strong>of</strong> law <strong>of</strong> God, the worship <strong>of</strong> God, the<br />

doctrine <strong>of</strong> atonement, relationship between the law and wisdom theology, kingdom <strong>of</strong> God, the<br />

Messiah, the inclusion <strong>of</strong> the gentiles, the theology <strong>of</strong> the Holy Spirit, and the preparation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

New Covenant. <strong>of</strong>fered: Arranged only.<br />

7051 The Revelation 3 hrs.<br />

This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> the text <strong>of</strong> the Apocalypse <strong>of</strong> John and will explore the historical<br />

and literary context in which the Apocalypse <strong>of</strong> John arose with an emphasis on the apocalyptic<br />

genre. Additionally, the course will also cover major interpretive problems that are found<br />

in the text and the effects <strong>of</strong> The Revelation on Christianity in the early patristic period and<br />

beyond. Students learn advanced skills in interpretation which they will demonstrate in a major<br />

exegesis paper. prerequisite: BIST 6220.<br />

7130 Selected Readings in Biblical Languages 1-3 hrs.<br />

This course consists <strong>of</strong> readings <strong>of</strong> biblical literature in either the original Aramaic, Hebrew or<br />

Greek. prerequisite: BIST 6231 or 6241. May be repeated on a different topic.<br />

7550 Newell Lectures in Biblical Study 2 hrs.<br />

Attendance at all lectures is required. Books and/or articles by the lecturer will be assigned for<br />

reading, with written reports and evaluation/interaction. consent: Instructor. repeat: May be<br />

repeated; no hour limit.<br />

7650 Guided Research and Student-Initiated Study 1-3 hrs.<br />

A course designed by a student and a pr<strong>of</strong>essor that addresses some particular area <strong>of</strong> interest in<br />

the area <strong>of</strong> biblical studies or that addresses a particular need in the student’s academic program<br />

in biblical studies. consent: Instructor. repeat: May be repeated.<br />
