5180 Discipling in the Christian Communities 3 hrs.<br />
Consideration <strong>of</strong> biblically informed, theologically sound, practical methods <strong>of</strong> fulfilling the Great<br />
Commission in contemporary culture. Focus on issues in making disciples in the postmodern era.<br />
5230 Spiritual Formation 3 hrs.<br />
This course invites students into an intentional process <strong>of</strong> discernment <strong>of</strong> their vocation and<br />
commitment to spiritual formation as a lifelong pattern for ministry. The intent <strong>of</strong> this course<br />
is to help create a spiritual climate that will foster growth and a spirit <strong>of</strong> reconciliation across all<br />
the student’s learning experiences in seminary and in contexts <strong>of</strong> ministry. note: Expected to be<br />
taken during an MDV or MAIS student’s first semester. Includes field education component.<br />
5300 Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Chaplaincy 3 hrs.<br />
Introductory overview <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional chaplaincy. Theory <strong>of</strong> pastoral care in chaplaincy, pastoral<br />
and personal identity in chaplaincy, effective and ethical pastoral practices, and pr<strong>of</strong>essional competencies<br />
as a member <strong>of</strong> an interdisciplinary team. Addresses several models for chaplaincy in a<br />
variety <strong>of</strong> clinical and pastoral contexts.<br />
5900 Research Design: Principles and Skills 1 hrs.<br />
Methods <strong>of</strong> research, bibliography, and design for thesis with attention to form and principles <strong>of</strong><br />
writing.<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> psychology <strong>of</strong> children at various developmental levels, learning theory in education<br />
<strong>of</strong> the child, materials and methods for teaching-learning with children, and a study <strong>of</strong> an<br />
adequate program for ministry with various age groups <strong>of</strong> children. note: Includes field education<br />

Directed readings in the history and philosophy <strong>of</strong> Christian education. Introduces students to<br />
historical and contemporary leaders and thinkers who have given shape to the field <strong>of</strong> Christian<br />

6370 Pastoral Care and Counseling 3 hrs.<br />
Foundational pastoral care and counseling course exploring the multi-faceted dimensions <strong>of</strong><br />
pastoral ministry in building healthy faith communities, caring for people in need, and leading a<br />
ministry <strong>of</strong> reconciliation. note: Includes field education component. Formerly PAST 5450.<br />
6380 Pastoral Care <strong>of</strong> Grieving Persons and Families 3 hrs.<br />
Church leaders are positioned in the community as key individuals in doing grief work with<br />
their congregants and with the community in general. Explores theology <strong>of</strong> suffering, loss,<br />
and death; models for pastoral care <strong>of</strong> grief and loss in a multitude <strong>of</strong> circumstances; and<br />
models for public ministry, including the planning and conduct <strong>of</strong> funerals. prerequisite:<br />
PAST 6370.<br />
