7950 Thesis 2hrs.<br />
Preparation <strong>of</strong> a thesis under the guidance <strong>of</strong> department faculty. note: Library approval required<br />
prior to completion <strong>of</strong> thesis. prerequisite: BIST 5900. grade: S/U registration.<br />
7955 Thesis Continuation 1 hr.<br />
Students who have not completed their thesis within the semester in which they enrolled, but<br />
carry their work forward into another semester must register for this 1 hour course. Approval<br />
required. (prerequisite: BIST 7950; Course may be repeated once; grade: S/U registration)<br />
Historical and Intercultural Studies<br />

Courses in historical and intercultural studies are designed to provide opportunity for critical reflection<br />
on the church’s participation in the mission <strong>of</strong> God. This mission involves historical, overseas, and homeland<br />
dimensions. Courses <strong>of</strong>fered concentrate on past developments <strong>of</strong> Christianity and issues appropriate to<br />
mission both in the overseas setting and in urban and multicultural contexts in North America.<br />
HCUS COURSES<br />
5060 Orientation to Missional Studies/Integration 3 hrs.<br />
This one-week, three-credit-hour entry course provides students with material for understanding<br />
the nature and process <strong>of</strong> graduate theological and missional studies. It will survey the three broad<br />
categories <strong>of</strong> missional studies: bible/theology, history, and culture with a view toward spiritual<br />
formation. This course is prerequisite for all MAIS. <strong>of</strong>fered: Arranged.<br />
5110 The History <strong>of</strong> Christianity I 3 hrs.<br />
A survey <strong>of</strong> Christianity from the New Testament to 1500 CE. Foundational study seeking integrated<br />
understanding <strong>of</strong> social, intellectual, theological and institutional elements <strong>of</strong> historic Christianity.<br />
5120 The History <strong>of</strong> Christianity II 3 hrs.<br />
A survey <strong>of</strong> Christianity from 1500 CE to present. Foundational study seeking to understand<br />
the developments <strong>of</strong> Christianity related to perceptions <strong>of</strong> the world, modern science and reason,<br />
industrialization, globalization and the rise <strong>of</strong> world Christianity.<br />
5200 Biblical Foundations <strong>of</strong> Mission 3 hrs.<br />
The mission <strong>of</strong> God is a central theme <strong>of</strong> the Scriptures as it relates to the present and<br />
coming Kingdom <strong>of</strong> God. The focus <strong>of</strong> this course is God’s mission as seen throughout<br />
the Scriptures and its implication for the ministry/mission <strong>of</strong> the church today. Formerly<br />
HCUS 7200.<br />
5900 Research Design: Principles and Skills 1 hrs.<br />
Methods <strong>of</strong> research, bibliography, and design for project or thesis, with attention to form and<br />
principles <strong>of</strong> writing.<br />
6000 History <strong>of</strong> the Christian Church 3 hrs.<br />
A historical overview <strong>of</strong> the major events, personalities, and ideas that shaped developments <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Christian church from the beginning to the present. Offered online only.<br />
6010 The Church <strong>of</strong> God Reformation Movement 3 hrs.<br />
Study <strong>of</strong> the background and history <strong>of</strong> the Church <strong>of</strong> God Reformation Movement, with particular<br />
attention given to the role <strong>of</strong> the Church <strong>of</strong> God in world Christianity.<br />
