came out in 1996 that Hong Kong and Singapore had also squeezed ahead, you’d have thought from<br />

the newspaper editorials and analyses that Asian armies had come ashore somewhere around<br />

Darwin and were fanning out across the country, appropriating consumer durables as they went. . . .<br />

At the time of my visit, Australia was booming as never before. It was enjoying one of the fastest<br />

rates of economic growth in the developed world, inflation was invisible, unemployment was at its<br />
