Message From Dale We all know these are challenging times to run a business. Everyone we talk to is working harder than ever. In the nursery and garden center business there is a lot of uncertainty. But I encourage each of you to stop, take a moment, and think about why our industry is so special. We produce and offer people plants that beautify the world. Proven Winners is a brand that belongs to and benefits all of us. You choose the plants that are best for your climate and clientele. Each plant sold funds the marketing and builds additional demand. The individual mix of Proven Winners plants that you develop gives homeowners the confidence to be successful gardeners. Together, we’ve all helped to fund over a half a million dollars of breast cancer research. We’ve touched lives and given hope to cancer survivors and their families with the help of a pink hydrangea. The nursery and garden center community has hosted over 300 pink days to raise money and awareness for this important cause. One plant at a time, the Spring Meadow community of plant geeks has raised more than a half million dollars for horticulture research (HRI) and endowed one horticulture scholarship. Together we are making a difference. We’ve made some changes to our catalog for 2012-2013. Now vines, evergreens and flowering shrubs (including broadleaf color items) are in separate sections. Technology Means Better Plants Spring Meadow Nursery was one of the first shrub wholesalers in the country to use flood floors, which has led to the development of healthier, more disease-resistant plants. Propagation Facilities High pressure fog systems, traveling booms, bottom heat floors, and computerized controls create the optimum propagation environment. It’s no surprise that many growers use us as their propagation department. Quality Control Our grading machine analyzes each plant and sorts it into one of four grades. The machine evaluates up to 7,500 plants per hour. Automating the grading process eliminates the possibility of human error when deciding whether or not to ship a plant, and has improved the consistency of Spring Meadow Nursery’s product. Trimmer At Spring Meadow Nursery, we trim our liners multiple times to produce that perfectly branched, compact liner. Historically this has been done with hand-held, gas powered hedgetrimmers. To accomplish this necessary task more effectively and efficiently, Spring Meadow invented a new piece of equipment: A 24-foot wide trimming machine. Using a 24-foot long cutting blade, this Spring Meadow-designed machine allows one person to trim over 3500 liner-trays in 10 minutes. It’s 40X more efficient than using hedge trimmers, and results in a cleaner, more uniform trim. 2
