From Seattle, Washington to Key West
Florida, each of the 11 zones (with
some zones subdivided) shows in
detail the lowest temperatures that can
be expected each year in the United
States and Canada.
We suggest consulting this map to help
you make your purchasing decisions,
based on your zone. We also suggest
you follow the recommendations of the
Cold Hardiness Map, unless you plan to
over-winter in a heated greenhouse at
your own discretion.
Cold isn’t the only factor determining whether plants
will survive and thrive. Excessive heat, particularly during
seasons of drought, can negatively impact plants also.
The 12 zones of the map indicate the average number
of days each year that a given region experiences “heat
days” with temperatures over 86 degrees (30 degrees
Celsius). Zones range from Zone 1 (less than one heat day)
to Zone 12 (more than 210 heat days).
To help you make your purchasing decisions, each variety
in our catalog has been coded for heat tolerance.
