Sambucus Elderberry
Family: Caprifoliaceae (Sambu-cus: old Latin name for Elder)
Word is getting out that Sambucus can be a fantastic ornamental garden plant. Recent
introductions have provided a wonderful array of foliage colors such as yellow, copper,
white and even black. This is a bold plant with vigorous growth. Most people find that
treating it as a perennial, cutting it back hard each fall, makes for a neat and beautiful
plant. Adaptable to almost all soils and easy to grow. NOTE: Plants bloom on old wood.
NATIVE: North America.
Black Beauty Sambucus
‘Adams’ (S. canadensis ‘Adams’)
A hardy, native shrub with an upright, suckering growth habit. Selected for
its fruit production. White flowers in mid summer and dark blue to black
fruit in late summer. The berries can be used to make jelly, jam, pie, or
juice, which is reportedly good for the health. Great for attracting birds
such as robins and cedar waxwings.
wonderfully with the foliage. Grow it as a shrub, or cut it back each year and
use it as a bold perennial. Developed by Ken Tobutt and Jacqui Prevette
of the East Malling Research Station in England. Propagation is prohibited
Black Lace TM
(S. n. ‘Eva’ pp#15,575, cbr#2633)
Black Lace is reminiscent of a Japanese maple with its lacy purpleblack
foliage. Even better, it produces massive pink flowers that reach
six inches in diameter. Its color and texture make it a great plant for the
perennial garden, patio container or the entrance garden. It has tons of
impulse appeal so make sure you stock up for the demand. Black coloration
is due to full sun and cooler temperatures. Plants will not get dark black in
southern climates. Developed by the British breeding program at Horticulture
Research Institute at East Malling. Propagation is prohibited without a
license. Patent/trademark tag required. USDA 4, AHS 8, 6-8 feet, gr 0.5
Item #: 71862 - 2 1 /4” • 71864 - 4” • 71865 - Quick Turn
‘Sutherland Gold’ (S. racemosa)
Beautiful, deeply cut golden foliage and a graceful habit. Even though it’s
said to be more resistant to leaf burn than ‘Plumosa Aurea’, it will look
its best in partial shade. It also holds its color better than other yellow
cultivars. The new spring growth is a beautiful copper-red and the fruit is
red in summer. USDA 3, AHS 7, 5-10 feet, gr 0.5 Item #: 72484 - 4”
‘York’ (S. c. ‘York’)
Selected for its large, numerous fruit, this is an excellent companion plant
to ‘Adams’. Fruit set will improve by planting the two varieties together.
USDA 3, AHS 9, 6-10’. Gr 1 Item #: 71794 - 4”
