<strong>On</strong> October 22, 2010 <strong>Cyclone</strong> <strong>Giri</strong> lashed Arakan State along the Bay of<br />
Bengal in Western <strong>Burma</strong> (Myanmar), causing at least 259 deaths and leaving<br />
over 200,000 Arakanese people homeless. Furthermore, there was<br />
widespread damage to homes, paddy farms, fishing equipment and<br />
infrastructure.<br />

The first report of the Arakan Human Rights and Development Organisation (AHRDO) - published on the<br />
second anniversary of <strong>Cyclone</strong> <strong>Giri</strong> - documents and highlights the situation in Arakan State before, during<br />
and after the cyclone. AHRDO wants to draw the Burmese government and international attention to the<br />
ongoing need for assistance to the affected Arakanese community, urging local and international media to<br />
highlight the continuing difficulties faced by the communities in Western <strong>Burma</strong>’s Arakan State affected by<br />
the disaster.<br />
