“And amongst mankind is he who sells himself, seeking <strong>the</strong> Pleasure of Allāh. And
Allāh is full of Sympathy to (His) slaves.” 51

Al-Hākim and Ibn Abī Hātim have narrated, with a similar narration recorded by Ibn
‘Asākir, that Al-Barā’ was asked about <strong>the</strong> verse,
﴿ وأ َنفِق ُوا فِي سبِيلِ‏ الل َّهِ‏ ولا تل ْق ُوا بِأ َيدِيك ُم إِل َى التهل ُك َةِ‏ ﴾
“And spend in <strong>the</strong> Path of Allāh, and do not throw yourselves into destruction.” 52
… Does it refer to a man who encounters <strong>the</strong> enemy and fights until he is killed [and in
ano<strong>the</strong>r narration, “who plunges into an enemy battalion numbering 1,000, and he goes in with only a
sword in his hand”] He said, “No, ra<strong>the</strong>r it is a man who commits a sin, and <strong>the</strong>n says
Allāh will not forgive him.” 53
Fourth)
It is narrated that Al-Qāsim ibn Mukhaymarah, one of <strong>the</strong> famous Imāms of <strong>the</strong> Tābi’īn, said
regarding <strong>the</strong> verse,
﴿ وأ َنفِق ُوا فِي سبِيلِ‏ الل َّهِ‏ ولا تل ْق ُوا بِأ َيدِيك ُم إِل َى التهل ُك َةِ‏ ﴾
“And spend in <strong>the</strong> Path of Allāh, and do not throw yourselves into destruction.” 54
He said, “Destruction is to abandon spending in <strong>the</strong> Path of Allāh (Jihād). As for if a man
plunges into <strong>the</strong> enemy who numbers 10,000 - <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>re is no objection against doing
such.” 55
