will inflict loss to <strong>the</strong> enemy or cause damage, or have a beneficial effect for <strong>the</strong> Muslims,
<strong>the</strong>n it is permissible also.” 65
And statements of Al-Qurtubī and Ibn Al-‘Arabī have already preceded.
Twelfth)
Followers of Imām Ash-Shāfi’ī
In <strong>the</strong> completion of Al-Majmū’ by Al-Mutī’ī رحمه االله , we find, “If <strong>the</strong> number of <strong>the</strong> kuffār is
twice <strong>the</strong> numbers of <strong>the</strong> Muslims, and <strong>the</strong>y do not fear defeat, it is obligatory to stand
firm… And if <strong>the</strong>y are more convinced that <strong>the</strong>y will fall in destruction, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>re are two
possibilities:
1) That <strong>the</strong>y may turn back, based on <strong>the</strong> verse,
﴿ ولا تل ْق ُوا بِأ َيدِيك ُم إِل َى التهل ُك َةِ‏ ﴾
“… and do not throw yourselves into destruction.” 66
2) That <strong>the</strong>y may not turn back, and this is <strong>the</strong> correct view, based on <strong>the</strong> verse,
(meaning),
﴿ يا أ َيها ال َّذِين آمنوا إِذ َا ل َقِيتم فِئ َة ً ف َاث ْبتوا ﴾
“O you who believe! When you meet (an enemy) force, take a firm stand
against <strong>the</strong>m…” 67
… And because <strong>the</strong> Mujāhid only fights in order to slay or to be slain.
If <strong>the</strong> number of <strong>the</strong> kuffār exceed twice <strong>the</strong> numbers of <strong>the</strong> Muslims, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y may turn
back. If <strong>the</strong>y are more convinced that <strong>the</strong>y will not be destroyed, <strong>the</strong>n it is better for <strong>the</strong>m to
remain steadfast so that <strong>the</strong> Muslims are not routed. If <strong>the</strong>y are more convinced that <strong>the</strong>y
will be destroyed, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>re are two possibilities:
• That it is obligatory to turn back, based on <strong>the</strong> words of Allāh, “… and do not
throw yourselves into destruction.” 68
