The Verdict of Shaykh Sulaymān Al-‘Ulwān
Shaykh Sulaymān Al-‘Ulwān, may Allāh hasten his release, was once asked,
“To <strong>the</strong> noble Shaykh Sulaymān Ibn Nāsir Al-‘Ulwān, may Allāh, <strong>the</strong> Most High preserve him: You
know what is happening to <strong>the</strong> Palestinians at this time from <strong>the</strong> crimes of <strong>the</strong> Jews and <strong>the</strong> humiliating
Arab silence. So is <strong>the</strong>re, in <strong>the</strong> self-sacrificial operations against <strong>the</strong> Jews, any opposition from <strong>the</strong>
Sharī’ah”
The Shaykh answered:
In <strong>the</strong> Name of Allāh, <strong>the</strong> Beneficent, <strong>the</strong> Merciful…
The pestering Jews are <strong>the</strong> ga<strong>the</strong>rers of all <strong>the</strong> shameful defects and <strong>the</strong> collectors of <strong>the</strong>
aggravations and <strong>the</strong> evils, and <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> most severe enemies of Allāh against Islām and
its people. He, <strong>the</strong> Most High, said:
‏﴿ل َتجِدن َّ أ َشد الناسِ‏ عداوة ً لِل َّذِين آمنوا ال ْيهود وال َّذِين أ َشرك ُوا ﴾
“Verily, you will find <strong>the</strong> strongest among men in enmity to <strong>the</strong> believers (Muslims)
<strong>the</strong> Jews and <strong>the</strong> mushrikūn.” 105
And Allāh has made it obligatory fighting against <strong>the</strong>m and make Jihād against <strong>the</strong>m so that
<strong>the</strong> Word of Allāh is <strong>the</strong> highest, and <strong>the</strong> word of those who disbelieve is <strong>the</strong> lowest. Yet all
this is when <strong>the</strong> enemies of Allāh remain within <strong>the</strong>ir states and do not break <strong>the</strong>ir contracts
and covenants and do not seize <strong>the</strong> wealth of <strong>the</strong> Muslims and overtake <strong>the</strong>ir states. He, <strong>the</strong>
Most High said:
‏﴿ق َاتِل ُوا ال َّذِين لا يؤمِنون َ بِالل َّهِ‏ ولا بِال ْيومِ‏ الآخِرِ‏ ولا يحرمون َ ما حرم الل َّه ورسول ُه ولا يدِينون َ دِين ال ْحق مِن
ال َّذِين أ ُوتوا ال ْكِتاب حتى يعط ُواال ْجِزية َ عن يدٍ‏ وهم صاغِرون َ ﴾
“Fight against those who believe not in Allāh, nor in <strong>the</strong> Last Day, nor forbid that
which has been forbidden by Allāh and His Messenger and those who acknowledge
not <strong>the</strong> Dīn of Truth (Islām) among <strong>the</strong> people of <strong>the</strong> Scripture (Jews and
Christians), until <strong>the</strong>y pay <strong>the</strong> Jizyah with willing submission, and feel <strong>the</strong>mselves
subdued.” 106
