Aircraft Maintenance Technology<br />

With three major metropolitan airports, six regional airports and numerous power stations<br />

on Long Island, opportunities for career growth are tremendous for well-trained aviation<br />

maintenance technicians. Licensed technicians with Airframe and Powerplant licenses will<br />

find good salaries, excellent benefits and personal satisfaction in this exciting field.<br />

This program provides both <strong>the</strong> hands-on experience and <strong>the</strong> related knowledge to service,<br />

repair and overhaul reciprocating and turbine engines and components, powerplant control<br />

systems, instrumentation, and induction and exhaust<br />

systems. You will practice <strong>the</strong> skills you need in airframe<br />

and powerplant overhaul as you work under very rigid<br />

procedures and <strong>the</strong> close supervision <strong>of</strong> inspectors.<br />

Three curriculum areas must be successfully completed<br />

to be eligible to take <strong>the</strong> Airframe and Powerplant<br />

Maintenance exams. They include General, 400<br />

hours; Airframe I and II, 755 hours; and Powerplant<br />

I and II, 755 hours. Upon successful completion <strong>of</strong> all<br />

exams, <strong>the</strong> candidates receive <strong>the</strong>ir licenses.<br />

Semesters <strong>begin</strong> September and January. Financial<br />

aid is available, call 631/667-6000 x455. The program<br />

is <strong>of</strong>fered at Tech’s new Aviation Facility at Republic<br />

Airport in Farmingdale. Students must meet with a<br />

counselor before registering. Career training loans<br />

Prerequisites: A keen interest in aviation, an aptitude<br />

for hands-on tasks, an ability to follow directions, and<br />

an inclination to pay careful attention to details.<br />

Transfer Credits: Wilson Tech accepts transfer credits<br />

for work successfully completed in o<strong>the</strong>r FAA-approved<br />

programs. Tech students can earn up to 30 advanced<br />

placement credits acceptable at numerous colleges <strong>of</strong>fering<br />

degrees in aviation technology including University<br />

<strong>of</strong> New Haven, Pennsylvania College <strong>of</strong> Technology,<br />

and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.<br />

Students must purchase coveralls with long sleeves,<br />

steel-toed boots, standard hand tools for each curriculum<br />

area (list will be provided). No extra fees for<br />

application, books, labs, tests, or graduation. Testing for <strong>the</strong> Designated Mechanic Exam<br />

(DME) included in your tuition. Waiver for approved military training (DD214)<br />

Designated Mechanic Exam<br />

Applicants seeking an Airframe and/or Powerplant license from <strong>the</strong> FAA can register to<br />

take <strong>the</strong> oral and practical exams at Wilson Tech’s Dix Hills campus. Prior to registering,<br />

however, students must be authorized to sit for <strong>the</strong> exam. For requirements, call 631/667-<br />

6000, ext. 320. To schedule pre-test interview, contact <strong>the</strong> Designated Mechanic Examiner<br />

at 631/752-1957. The Testing Center is open Monday through Thursday from 3–8 PM.<br />
