Case Management<br />

Since health care in <strong>the</strong> U.S. has evolved into an<br />

environment <strong>of</strong> managed care, <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional case manager has become a vital<br />

and crucial link to a successful patient outcome.<br />

This course will provide <strong>the</strong> essentials <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> case<br />

management process. It is geared to health care<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals (nurses, social workers, vocational<br />

counselors) who are interested in entering this<br />

field. The first section will cover <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong><br />

managed care, reimbursement systems, patient<br />

assessment, clinical pathways, coordination <strong>of</strong><br />

resources and discharge planning. Topics include<br />

standards <strong>of</strong> practice, patient rights, peer review,<br />

informed consent and legal issues. The process<br />

for licensure and certification requirements will<br />

also be discussed.<br />

Electrocardiography (EKG)<br />

Learn to use <strong>the</strong> electrocardiograph machine to<br />

record <strong>the</strong> electrical charges that occur during<br />

a heartbeat. Gain necessary practice applying<br />

leads and recording heart action. This experience<br />

will help you obtain a job within hospitals,<br />

clinics, private physician <strong>of</strong>fices, and ambulatory<br />

care centers; however employment possibilities<br />

may be limited for those students without additional<br />

skills. Medical Assisting/Clinical and Phlebotomy<br />

may increase a student’s employment<br />

opportunities. Last day <strong>of</strong> class is <strong>the</strong> NCCT<br />

Certification test. Testing fee separate.<br />

Hemodialysis<br />

This basic introduction includes: anatomy and<br />

physiology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> renal system, basic medical<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice procedures, chronic renal failure, and<br />

principles <strong>of</strong> dialysis. Focus on <strong>the</strong> roles <strong>of</strong><br />

technician, LPN, and <strong>the</strong> RN in dialysis today.<br />

Become familiar with all dialysis standards.<br />

This class consists <strong>of</strong> both lecture and clinical/laboratory<br />

practice. You must be available<br />

days, evenings, and Saturdays for clinical hours.<br />

Prerequisites: high school diploma or equivalent,<br />

and a complete physical with all immunizations<br />

prior to first day <strong>of</strong> class. Call 631/667-6000,<br />

x320 for a medical form that your doctor must<br />

complete. Purchase <strong>of</strong> a designated uniform is<br />

also required (approx. $50). A background in<br />

health care is preferred.<br />

basics <strong>of</strong> venipuncture and electrocardiography.<br />
