Can I receive tax incentives for<br />
BOCES courses<br />
The Taxpayer Relief Act <strong>of</strong> 1997 created <strong>the</strong><br />
Lifetime Learning Credit, which is a tax incentive<br />
to help you <strong>of</strong>fset <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> your continuing<br />
education course work. A family can claim on<br />
its tax return a credit equal to 20% <strong>of</strong> $5,000 <strong>of</strong><br />
educational expenses, so <strong>the</strong> maximum benefit is<br />
$1,000 for each tax year. For fur<strong>the</strong>r information,<br />
contact your tax advisor.<br />
Are <strong>the</strong>re any additional costs<br />
We make every effort to include all costs, including<br />
books and basic hand tools, as part <strong>of</strong><br />
course tuition. In limited instances students are<br />
required to purchase personal protective equipment<br />
or personal tools. Your course description<br />
in this catalog will indicate any additional costs<br />
or requirements.<br />
Will I receive a certificate and<br />
CEUs<br />
Yes, you will! Certificates <strong>of</strong> completion are issued<br />
to all career & technical education students<br />
who have successfully completed a course. To be<br />
eligible for a certificate, you must attend 80% <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> class sessions (unless o<strong>the</strong>rwise stipulated)<br />
and complete all o<strong>the</strong>r course requirements with<br />
a grade <strong>of</strong> 80% or above. You will also earn one<br />
Continuing Education Credit (CEU) for every 10<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> study. Ask your employer if CEUs count<br />
toward promotions. Some companies reimburse<br />
employees who successfully complete courses<br />
that <strong>of</strong>fer CEUs.<br />
Do Tech courses qualify for<br />
veteran’s benefits<br />
Yes, veterans may qualify for complimentary<br />
training at Wilson Technological Center through<br />
<strong>the</strong> Division <strong>of</strong> Veteran Affairs. Contact your local<br />
