Burial 457 (Square 101.V–W27–28, Cut [30,121],
Fill [30,122], [30,123], [30,205], Skeleton
[30,211]), Color Plate 5.1
This skeleton belonged to an older adult male. The
age was based on the dental wear and degeneration
of the joints and spine. The sex was determined
from the large mastoid process, flaring angulus
mandibulae, and narrow sciatic notch. We were
able to take approximate lengths in situ for the long
bones as the fragmented nature of the bones would
not preserve that information for further analysis
in the lab. The stature analysis indicated that this
individual was quite tall, approximately 177.8 cm (or
between 173.6 to 182 cm with error margins taken
into account). Pathologies noted were eburnation on
the TMJ and Atlas. Osteophytic growth was noted
on the Atlas (temporo-mandibular joint) and Axis
with a score of 3 according to Brothwell. A nonmetric
trait noted was a split hypoglossal canal.
Molar dental wear was between 5+ to 5++ according
to Brothwell’s, indicating an age over 45 years of age.
Further, the uneven wear of the maxillary incisors
and left premolars suggest that this individual may
have been using his teeth as tools.
This individual was an older female. The age was
based on dental wear which indicated advanced age,
at least over 45 years of age according to Brothwell.
Sex assessment was based on the wide sciatic notch,
which was photographed in situ. Approximate measurements
of some of the long bones were taken in
situ as they were fragmented and measurements
would not be possible after lifting. Several pathologies
were noted: Cribra Orbitalia (healed), Occipital
porosity (active), Porotic Hyperostosis on the left
parietal (active), medium lipping of the Lumbar vertebrae
(L4, L5), lipping of a thoracic vertebrae with a
score of 1 according to Brothwell (the individual vertebra
could not be determined), osteophytic growth
on the left thumb metacarpal with a score of 1, and
finally osteophytic growth with a score of 2 on one of
the medial phalanges of the left hand. One sesamoid
was also found in the left pedis.
