Finding Common Ground<br />

When people work and live together, they can have different<br />
perspectives that affect their behaviours and actions. These<br />
differences can also affect the quality <strong>of</strong> life <strong>of</strong> everyone<br />
in the city. However, when people make an effort to<br />
follow rules and standards that they have agreed upon<br />
and practise good citizenship, the residents and local<br />
government <strong>of</strong> a city can solve most problems, concerns<br />
and issues together.<br />

Problem solving is one <strong>of</strong> the strategies that both<br />
individuals and local government can use to solve<br />
problems and deal with concerns. A problem solving<br />
strategy, such as the one below, can help you work<br />
effectively with others and respect their points <strong>of</strong> view.<br />
Solving Problems<br />
1. Identify the problem. Share what you think the<br />
problem is. Work together to solve it. For example,<br />
make a list <strong>of</strong> three things each <strong>of</strong> you would be<br />
willing to do to improve or solve the problem.<br />
2. Talk through the problem. Use “I” instead <strong>of</strong> “you.”<br />
Name calling usually begins with the word “you.”<br />
Use “I” statements that talk about what you want,<br />
need or feel. “I want to say what I think,” works<br />
better than “You don’t let me say anything.” Say<br />
what you mean. What needs changing How will<br />
you change it Be clear in your choice <strong>of</strong> words.<br />
3. Try to understand other people’s point <strong>of</strong> view. The<br />
best way to do this is to ask questions about what<br />
other people want, need or feel. Don’t speak for other<br />
people. Listen to what they have to say. Repeat or<br />
write down the other point <strong>of</strong> view before you express<br />
your own opinion.<br />
4. Put it on paper. When you write things down, you<br />
can make your ideas clear. This helps you focus on<br />
the problem. Use your imagination. There are many<br />
different ways that a problem can be solved.<br />
