Scientific program<br />

The CSM featured more than 150<br />

presentations, 66 workshops, 47<br />

problem-based learning discussions<br />

(PBLDs) <strong>and</strong> quality assurance sessions<br />

<strong>and</strong> 94 posters.<br />

The meeting boasted an impressive<br />

line-up <strong>of</strong> invited speakers – Dr Steve<br />

Yentis (<strong>ANZCA</strong> CSM Visitor) from<br />

London, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor David Scott<br />

(Australasian Visitor) from Melbourne,<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor M. Catherine Bushnell (FPM<br />

CSM Visitor) from Montreal, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

You Wan (Hong Kong Visitor, Pain<br />

Medicine) from Beijing, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the highlights <strong>of</strong> the scientifi c<br />

program was a real-time ultrasoundguided<br />

regional anaesthesia<br />

demonstration. Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Manoj Karmakar demonstrated a sciatic<br />

nerve block, a lumbar plexus block<br />

<strong>and</strong> spinal anaesthesia for a patient<br />

undergoing a total knee replacement<br />

at the Prince <strong>of</strong> Wales Hospital in Hong<br />

Kong with the live footage beamed into<br />

the convention centre.<br />

The prestigious Gilbert Brown Prize for<br />

research by Fellows within eight years<br />

<strong>of</strong> admission to their original fellowship,<br />

was awarded to Dr Paul Sadleir from<br />

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in WA for<br />

“Sugammadex unlikely to attenuate<br />

rocuronium-induced anaphylaxis<br />

– evidence from an in-vivo model”.<br />

Formal project prizes were awarded to<br />

Dr Sharnie Wu from Lithgow in NSW<br />

for “Anterior sub-Tenon anaesthesia for<br />

cataract surgery” <strong>and</strong> Dr Yee Wah Tse<br />

from Hong Kong for “Sudden blackout <strong>of</strong><br />

the Dräger Zeus anaesthetic machine”.<br />

The CSM <strong>2011</strong> trainee poster prize was<br />

awarded to Dr Natalie Kruit from NSW<br />

for “25 year retrospective analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

trends in management <strong>of</strong> liver trauma”<br />

<strong>and</strong> Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ross Kennedy<br />

from Christchurch, <strong>New</strong> Zeal<strong>and</strong> won the<br />

CSM <strong>2011</strong> open poster prize for “Use <strong>of</strong><br />

intrathecal morphine does not infl uence<br />

‘MAC-awake’ <strong>of</strong> sev<strong>of</strong>l urane”.<br />

To maximise the dissemination <strong>of</strong><br />

presentations delivered at the meeting,<br />

<strong>ANZCA</strong>’s Education Project Offi cer Susan<br />

Batur worked on behalf <strong>of</strong> FPM to record<br />

several podcasts that can be accessed<br />

via the FPM website.<br />

A successful workplace-based<br />

assessment (WBA) workshop was<br />

also coordinated by Dr Jodi Graham on<br />

behalf <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ANZCA</strong> Workplace-based<br />

Assessment Committee to introduce<br />

delegates to some <strong>of</strong> the challenges<br />

faced in introducing WBA tools to<br />

the <strong>ANZCA</strong> training program.<br />

Pain medicine<br />

The well-attended FPM Refresher Course<br />

Day – 158 registrants – was a highly<br />

successful precursor to the CSM marred<br />

slightly by the temporary illness <strong>of</strong><br />

keynote speaker Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Bushnell.<br />

The theme <strong>of</strong> the Refresher Course<br />

Day was “Pain management: Getting<br />

closer to the dragon pearl”. Twelve<br />

speakers gave presentations on sessions<br />

titled “Neurobiology”, “Challenges in<br />

opioid therapy”, “Outcomes in pain<br />

management” <strong>and</strong> “Eastern infl uences”.<br />

The rest <strong>of</strong> the FPM program held over<br />

the fi rst two days <strong>of</strong> the CSM covered<br />

psychology, cancer pain, pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism,<br />

musculoskeletal pain <strong>and</strong> acute<br />

peri-operative pain.<br />

FPM wrapped up its CSM program<br />

with its annual general meeting at<br />

which the winner <strong>of</strong> the Dean’s Prize<br />

was announced as Dr Rohan Russell<br />

for “A comparison <strong>of</strong> post-operative<br />

opioid requirements <strong>and</strong> effectiveness<br />

in methadone-maintained <strong>and</strong><br />

buprenorphine-maintained patients”.<br />

The Free Paper Session winner was<br />

Dr Allyson Browne for “Screening for<br />

acute factors that predict pain post<br />

trauma: A pilot study”.<br />
