<strong>New</strong> horizons at the NZ<br />
Anaesthesia ASM <strong>2011</strong><br />
Online registration is open for the <strong>New</strong><br />
Zeal<strong>and</strong> Anaesthesia Annual Scientific<br />
Meeting <strong>2011</strong> being held in Auckl<strong>and</strong><br />
from November 2 to 5. Earlybird<br />
registration is available until<br />
September 30.<br />
Abstract submission is also open with<br />
authors invited to submit until August<br />
26. They will be notified about their<br />
success by September 14.<br />
The ASM jointly hosted by <strong>ANZCA</strong>’s<br />
<strong>New</strong> Zeal<strong>and</strong> National Committee <strong>and</strong><br />
the <strong>New</strong> Zeal<strong>and</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> Anaesthetists<br />
(NZSA) with the organising committee<br />
coming from the Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Anaesthesiology <strong>and</strong> Perioperative<br />
Medicine at Waitemata District Health<br />
Board (North Shore Hospital), led by<br />
F<strong>ANZCA</strong> Dr Michal Kluger.<br />
Keynote speakers have been asked<br />
to explore innovation <strong>and</strong> new thinking<br />
in anaesthesia in line with the meeting<br />
theme, “new horizons”.<br />
Speakers include clinical psychologist<br />
<strong>and</strong> TV personality Nigel Latta <strong>and</strong> <strong>New</strong><br />
Zeal<strong>and</strong>er <strong>of</strong> the Year 2010 Ray Avery.<br />
The faculty also boasts Dr David<br />
Bogod (UK), a former editor <strong>of</strong><br />
Anaesthesia, along with Dr Ross Kerridge<br />
(Australia) <strong>and</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Guy Ludbrook<br />
(Australia), who will look at innovative<br />
models <strong>of</strong> care <strong>and</strong> new models <strong>of</strong> drug<br />
delivery.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor John Myburgh (Australia)<br />
will look at innovations in intensive<br />
care medicine, while Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ken<br />
Whyte (NZ) will bring a physician’s<br />
perspective to topics such as sleep<br />
apnoea, pulmonary hypertension <strong>and</strong><br />
sleep medicine.<br />
The NZSA Invited Speaker is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
Alan Merry, who will discuss safety,<br />
improving outcome strategies <strong>and</strong><br />
media issues.<br />
Workshops will cover cardiac exercise<br />
testing using the CPX methodology,<br />
peripheral nerve ultrasound techniques,<br />
transthoracic cardiac echocardiography<br />
<strong>and</strong> sessions on the new WebAIRS online<br />
web-based incident recording system.<br />
Dr Kluger says that the workshops will<br />
be interactive, with participant numbers<br />
limited to ensure as much exposure to<br />
each topic as possible. World leaders in<br />
their fields will facilitate the workshops.<br />
There will be an emphasis on<br />
research at the ASM with the Ritchie<br />
Prize <strong>and</strong> trainee free paper being given<br />
a combined session <strong>and</strong> a free poster<br />
session under the new horizons theme.<br />
The best poster (trainee or specialist) will<br />
receive a $500 prize. There will also be<br />
plenty <strong>of</strong> networking opportunities.<br />
The social program includes an<br />
evening in the Maritime Museum on<br />
Auckl<strong>and</strong>’s waterfront, a M*A*S*Hthemed<br />
bar where participants can<br />
relive the world <strong>of</strong> Hawkeye, Hot<br />
Lips <strong>and</strong> Klinger <strong>and</strong> a spectacular<br />
conference dinner.<br />
The meeting has attracted strong<br />
support from the industry with all<br />
exhibition space sold <strong>and</strong> exhibitors<br />
undertaking to work within the new<br />
horizons theme.<br />
