And finally, and not entirely unrelated,
is the new project on “The impact
of assessment on life and learning”.
This idea sprang from previous work
evaluating the mini-Clinical Evaluation
Exercise (mini-CEX), and the impact it
had on trainees and supervisors, 7, 8 and
also from my involvement as chair of the
Assessments Committee for ANZCA,
and as a final examiner.
So far we have published a background
paper 9 and are now working to finalise
the survey instrument. An important part
of this study will be in-depth interviews
of trainees, seeking their views on the
various assessment requirements and
how they approach learning for these
different assessments. Ultimately,
the goal is to propose an approach to
assessment that supports and enhances
learning while satisfying requirements for
progression through the training scheme.
