Effective prospect research has the capacity to trans<strong>for</strong>m<br />

fundrais<strong>in</strong>g results <strong>in</strong> higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutions. Given<br />

the state of the economy <strong>in</strong> general and the outlook <strong>for</strong><br />

fundrais<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> higher education specifically, it is more<br />

important than ever <strong>for</strong> prospect research professionals<br />

to rise to this challenge. By tak<strong>in</strong>g a hard look at their<br />

processes and practices and mak<strong>in</strong>g improvements,<br />

identify<strong>in</strong>g efficiencies and <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novations where<br />

possible, prospect research professionals can lead their<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions to higher levels of fundrais<strong>in</strong>g per<strong>for</strong>mance.<br />

The <strong>Best</strong> <strong>Practices</strong> described <strong>in</strong> this study are based on the<br />

identified practices of organizations that are sett<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

bar <strong>in</strong> terms of fundrais<strong>in</strong>g success. There are practices<br />

that highlight <strong>in</strong>novations <strong>in</strong> the field, efficient resource<br />

allocation and the creation of mean<strong>in</strong>gful opportunities<br />

<strong>for</strong> teamwork. When implemented, these practices should<br />

help any organization reach new heights of per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />

and professionalism.<br />

It is our hope that this publication will enhance prospect<br />

research operations at <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong>stitutions, contribute to<br />

the professional development of <strong>in</strong>dividual practitioners<br />

and managers, raise the perception of the value of research<br />

with<strong>in</strong> the fundrais<strong>in</strong>g community, contribute to the body<br />

of knowledge <strong>in</strong> the field, and serve as a spr<strong>in</strong>gboard <strong>for</strong><br />

future studies and research <strong>in</strong>itiatives.<br />
