Westmont’s exciting history unfolds in each room of this 1872 home built by Mr. Gregg. Step back into the Victorian era when you visit the parlor. Learn about the 1920s and 1930s when you visit the kitchen and dining areas. Experience the award-winning outdoor garden. Westmont Historical Society Become a member of the Westmont Historical Society and help preserve the rich heritage of Westmont. Family Membership $15; Individual Membership $10. Call the museum for details. Volunteer Opportunities The museum and the garden club are seeking people of all ages who would like to make a difference in Westmont. Be a docent, archive artifacts, or design a garden plan. We have volunteer opportunities to fit your interests. Call the museum for additional information. Westmont’s Down to Earth Garden Club Meetings are held the first Monday of each month (except January) at 7:00PM. Most meetings are held at the Westmont Community Center. Memberships are $20 and include membership to the Garden Clubs of Illinois (GCI), the quarterly publication of “Garden Glories”, and participation in a variety of special programs. Education & Scout Programs Calling all teachers, students and scouting groups! The Gregg House now offers programs for elementary school aged children that fulfill state standards. Programs are available September through May. Scout groups may also earn badges for local lore and local history. Programs that include a craft will require a small fee. Programs can be held at the museum or are offered as an outreach program. Please contact the museum for information and reservations. The Excelsior Experience (Grades 3-5) This hands-on, problem based architecture program is designed for grades 3-5 and meets state standards in math, social sciences and fine arts. Four components of the program include identifying common architecture features, creating a time line of local history, measuring, estimating, identifying geometric shapes, solving math problems to determine area, using building blocks to create patterns and learning about brick making. The length of the program is determined by the teacher and can range from 1 hour to half a day. Gregg’s Mystery Gadgets (Grades 2-5) We’ll try to identify various household items of the past and compare them to items used today. This program is available as an out-reach program. Rural Westmont (Grades 1-3) Learn about Westmont at the turn of the century (1900). Discover what life was like as a farmer, see different farm tools, and hear a story. Butter churning is optional. This program is available as an out-reach program. Optical Toys (Grades 2-5) Thaumatropes, Zoetropes and Kaleidoscopes. Let’s learn about persistence of vision, illusions of movement, angles, geometry and design. Create your own optical toy. Fee: $2 for materials. This is available as an out-reach program. Victorian Tea Party (Grades 1-5) Our costumed hostess will take us back to the late 1800s for an old fashioned tea party to discover what life was like in the grand Victorian times. Taste cucumber sandwiches and sip some lemonade. We’ll learn about good manners and parlor games that children played. We’ll also create a Victorian keepsake to take home! Please call to make a reservation. Registration will be taken at the Westmont Community Center for this program once your reservation is confirmed. Fee is $8 per child, minimum of 7 children. Girl Scout troops welcome! This is a great way to earn a badge. Annual Christmas Program (Grades K-5) December Christmas at the Gregg House changes each year to depict a different culture or time in history. Victorian, Colonial, Pioneer, WWII, and Christmas Around the World are just a few examples of the traditions we have celebrated. Local school children are invited to take part in these celebrations to learn more about our ancestors and holidays of the past. Visits include hands-on experiences and a craft. The annual holiday programs are approximately 30-45 minutes in length and are Free. Please make a reservation by calling (630)969-8080. Teddy Bear Tea Party Ages: 4-10 years It’s a well known fact that bears like parties! Bring your cuddliest teddy bear or stuffed animal friend to our special tea party. We will play bear games, hear bear stories, make some bear wear (take-home craft) for our teddy bear friends and learn more about the history of these popular toys. Since this is a party, we will enjoy some snacks and treats, too! For a Beary good time, join us today! Please preregister at the Westmont Community Center. Scout troops welcome! DAY DATE TIME R/NR FEE CODE Tu 10/12 4:00-5:30PM $10 171-2-1 LOCATION: Gregg House Museum Kris Kringle Krafts Ages: 4-10 years Kris Kringle is ringing his bell looking for creative boys and girls to make holiday ornaments. We will turn Hershey kisses, cinnamon sticks, ribbon, beads and pipe cleaners into miniature mice, Santas, Christmas trees and other holiday ornaments. With the holidays just around the corner, we want to get a head start on decorating. These simple homemade ornaments make great gifts, too! Materials will be supplied. This is a drop in program. Allow 20-30 minutes. The museum will stay open longer today so you can stop by after school or bring your scout troop. Feel the holiday excitement in the air when you enter the Gregg House this Christmas season for a blend of traditions and celebrations from around the world. Each room is decked with miniature trees that sparkle and glow in the customs of our global friends. Poland, France, Sweden, Italy, Mexico, and more…discover the origins of many of today’s Christmas traditions so different, yet so familiar. Children can make a small ornament to take home.
