Metacomet Ridge Conservation Compact Document <strong>and</strong> Map<br />

The following text is keyed to a map <strong>of</strong> the Metacomet Ridge (See second page) that depicts<br />

the ridge <strong>and</strong> the 16 municipalities that signed the compact (<strong>Guilford</strong>, Farmington, North<br />

Branford, Simsbury, Bloomfield, Berlin, Middletown, Durham, Middlefield, Suffield,<br />

Plainville, Avon, West Hartford, Meriden, Wallingford, East Haven, Branford), which follows<br />

below. A copy <strong>of</strong> the map document can also be found in <strong>Town</strong> Hall South, Boston Street,<br />

<strong>Guilford</strong>, Connecticut.<br />

“WE THE SIGNATORIES RECOGNIZE THAT: Our Conservation Commissions hereby enter into a<br />

Compact with our neighboring Conservation Commissions for the purpose <strong>of</strong> protecting the Metacomet<br />

Ridge ecosystem. The Metacomet Ridge Conservation Compact affirms our commitment to protect the<br />

natural resources <strong>of</strong> the Metacomet Ridge. FURTHERMORE, WE UNDERSTAND THAT: As the<br />

Commissions concerned with the conservation <strong>of</strong> the natural resources within our respective municipalities,<br />

we play a key role in encouraging our municipality’s commitment to the spirit <strong>of</strong> this compact.<br />

THEREFORE, WE ENTER INTO THIS VOLUNTARY INTER-COMMISSION COMPACT TO<br />

AFFIRM OUR COMMITMENT TO:<br />

• Conduct a natural resource inventory <strong>of</strong> our portion <strong>of</strong> the Metacomet Ridge that identifies<br />

priority areas for protection, <strong>and</strong> incorporate those areas into our Open Space Plan <strong>and</strong> call for<br />

their protection.<br />

• Assist <strong>and</strong> work with our Planning <strong>and</strong> Zoning Commission to update our Plan <strong>of</strong> Conservation<br />

<strong>and</strong> Development to incorporate protection <strong>of</strong> the identified priority areas <strong>of</strong> Metacomet Ridge.<br />

• Assist <strong>and</strong> work with out Planning <strong>and</strong> Zoning Commission to update Zoning <strong>and</strong> Subdivision<br />

Regulations to promote the retention <strong>of</strong> the natural l<strong>and</strong>scape, maintain <strong>and</strong> enhance<br />

recreational opportunities, minimize forest fragmentation <strong>and</strong> avoid visual pollution on or near<br />

the Metacomet Ridge.<br />

• Encourage <strong>and</strong>/or sponsor educational programs aimed at informing the public about the<br />

important value <strong>of</strong> the Metacomet Ridge.<br />

Approved by individual votes <strong>of</strong> the participating Conservation Commissions <strong>and</strong> ratified on this Earth<br />

day, April 22, 1998.”<br />

First Selectman Samuel Bartlett <strong>and</strong> Environmental Planner Leslie Kane signed the<br />

document on behalf <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Guilford</strong> Conservation Commission.<br />
