The dem<strong>and</strong> for skilled labor will increase continuously<br />

over the next decades due to the changing structure <strong>of</strong><br />

the national economy <strong>and</strong> technological development.<br />

Knowledge economy strategies will create a significant<br />

dem<strong>and</strong> for all skill categories including pr<strong>of</strong>essionals,<br />

middle level technicians, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essionals <strong>and</strong><br />

managers. Against this background, the technical<br />

educational institutions are being strengthened to<br />

provide <strong>and</strong> steer socio-economic development <strong>of</strong> the<br />

country.<br />

At present, about 180,000 students leave the school<br />

system after completion <strong>of</strong> their O/L <strong>and</strong> A/L<br />

examinations. Nearly 17 percent <strong>of</strong> students who<br />

qualify for university education can gain admission<br />

to universities. A large proportion <strong>of</strong> these students<br />

enter the labour force without following any proper<br />

skills development programme. Therefore, this group<br />

will be the prime target for specific training <strong>and</strong> skills<br />

development programmes<br />
