producers. SMEs will also be encouraged to invest in<br />

cultivation, providing necessary inputs (eg. l<strong>and</strong>) <strong>and</strong><br />

creating a conducive environment for investment.<br />

Thus, the import <strong>of</strong> these items will be confined to<br />

meet only the marginal requirements <strong>of</strong> the consumers<br />

<strong>and</strong> the hotel trade. Any glut in production during the<br />

seasons will be converted into exportable items by<br />

modernizing the fruit processing industry in the country.<br />

Vegetable <strong>and</strong> fruit packing crates will be introduced to<br />

reduce the post harvest losses by a significant amount.<br />

Floriculture – Best Quality Products<br />

Sri Lanka will be recognized as one <strong>of</strong> the best<br />

quality production centres for floriculture products<br />

in the world. In cut flower production, high quality<br />

new hybrid varieties imported from overseas will be<br />

used as mother plants <strong>and</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> nurseries will<br />

be modernized with tissue culture apparatus. 1,500<br />

floriculture villages will be established in the Western,<br />

North Western <strong>and</strong> Central Provinces. 30,000 jobs will<br />

be generated in rural <strong>and</strong> sub urban areas. With that,<br />

the share <strong>of</strong> exports <strong>of</strong> cut flowers <strong>and</strong> foliage will<br />

increase significantly during the decade.<br />

Herbal Farms for Better Health<br />

25,000 hectares <strong>of</strong> herbal farms will be established<br />

in the Eastern <strong>and</strong> Northern Provinces under the<br />

supervision <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> Indigenous Medicine.<br />

In addition, 20,000 hectares <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> will be newly<br />

cultivated with ginger, turmeric <strong>and</strong> citronella in<br />

Kilinochchi, Ampara, Hambantota <strong>and</strong> Trincomalee<br />

Districts. Approximately 0.2 million hectares <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong>s<br />

will be cultivated with pulses, tubers <strong>and</strong> cereals<br />

country wide.<br />

Strengthened Input Delivery System<br />

Seed Farms for Quality Inputs<br />

The Government seed farms at Kundasale,<br />

Aluththarama, Malwatta, Karadiyanaru, Kantalai,<br />

Maha Illupallama, Peedru, K<strong>and</strong>apola, Meepilimana,<br />

Udaradella, Rahangala, Polonnaruwa, Paranthan <strong>and</strong><br />

Jaffna will be developed with modern technology<br />

aimed at increasing the yield. Buffer stocks <strong>of</strong> certified<br />

seeds will be maintained ensuring an uninterrupted<br />

supply <strong>of</strong> seeds.<br />
