Sabaragamuwa Arunalokaya<br />

The Sabaragamuwa Province which is well known for its gems, spices <strong>and</strong> plantations, contributes to about 6.3<br />

percent <strong>of</strong> the GDP. The provincial economy enjoys a per capita income <strong>of</strong> US$ 1,570. Under the Sabaragamuwa<br />

Arunalokaya, Kegalle <strong>and</strong> Ratnapura districts will be developed with the aim <strong>of</strong> exploiting their economic potential.<br />

It is expected to increase the contribution to the GDP by the two districts <strong>of</strong> the Province with uniquely different<br />

resources in each district, which <strong>of</strong>fer quite a diverse opportunity for development.<br />

The Mahinda Chintana - Vision for the Future introduces Sabaragamuwa Arunalokaya with the aim <strong>of</strong> exploiting the<br />

opportunities to provide benefits to the people in the province. As both districts have a large part <strong>of</strong> estate <strong>and</strong> rural<br />

communities, this regional development initiative will aim at addressing their needs on housing, drinking water,<br />

electricity, roads, schools <strong>and</strong> health facilities, whilst supplementing the benefits <strong>of</strong> development programmes <strong>of</strong><br />

Provincial Councils <strong>and</strong> line agencies <strong>of</strong> the Government.<br />
