Since the complete liberation <strong>of</strong> the Eastern Province from LTTE terrorism in July 2007, an accelerated development<br />

programme was implemented for the Eastern Province. The economic contribution <strong>of</strong> Eastern Province to GDP is<br />

about 5.8 percent. The provincial GDP is contributed by all three sectors; Agriculture, Industry <strong>and</strong> Services. Eastern<br />

Province currently grows at around 14 percent <strong>and</strong> the per capita income is US$ 1,877.<br />

Development Potential<br />

The Eastern Province has diversified natural resources to develop paddy, agriculture, tourism, wildlife, fisheries,<br />

livestock <strong>and</strong> sugar in all three districts. The three districts consists <strong>of</strong> about 15% <strong>of</strong> the country’s l<strong>and</strong> area<br />

which is arable for wide variety <strong>of</strong> crops <strong>and</strong> owns plenty <strong>of</strong> natural resources varying from fisheries to minerals.<br />

The Eastern Province is the highest contributor to the country’s paddy production <strong>and</strong> has much potential in<br />

agriculture <strong>and</strong> lucrative agri-businesses.<br />

Many initiatives have been undertaken to support <strong>and</strong> enhance economic development <strong>of</strong> the Province,<br />

including the following:<br />

– Electricity – Power generation plant at Trincomalee <strong>and</strong> distribution <strong>and</strong><br />

transmission network<br />

– Roads – All national roads, connecting Trincomalee, Batticaloa, <strong>and</strong><br />

Ampara to other provinces<br />

– Transport (Roads, Railways) – Eastern Railway Development Project, Trincomalee<br />

– Medawachchiya Railway Line<br />
