Recreation Department
youth basketball, adult basketball, men’s softball
and men’s & women’s volleyball.
Summer 2007 marked the sixth season of
operation at the renovated pools at Veterans
Memorial Park. Favorable summer weather
conditions certainly helped our total visitor tally
for the season,
which reached
42,003. That’s a
healthy average
daily attendance of
488 over the 86
days of operation.
Seven hundred
and ninety-five
registrations were processed for our group
American Red Cross Learn To Swim classes,
with another 275 individuals enjoying the
personal attention afforded in private lessons (up
63% from the previous year!). One hundred and
twenty-one youngsters swam for our competitive
swim team, the “South Windsor Seals”.
Recreation Supervisor, Annette Figueroa
resigned to take the Aquatic Director position in
Cape Coral, Florida, and welcomed replacement
Jaime Crowley joined our team shortly thereafter.
Sadly, on October 13, 2007 our prized facility was
severely scarred by vandals causing over
$50,000 in fire-related damages. The toddler
pool cover was completely destroyed and over
one-third of the fiberglass grates covering the
perimeter gutters were charred beyond use. All
necessary clean up and repairs were done in
time to open for the 2008 season thanks to the
efforts of Public Works staff and conscientious
contractors.
Once again, numerous summer day camp
opportunities were available to local youngsters.
A total of 1,738
registrants enjoyed
the likes of Camp
Discovery; Little
Adventure Unit
(teens); Baseball
Camp; Basketball
Camp; CSI Camp;
Performing Arts Camp and six different SkyHawk
Sports Camp. We are proud to continue to claim
that South Windsor remains the only municipal
day camp program (Adventure Unit, Camp
Discovery & Little Explorers) in the state to be
accredited by the American Camp Association.
Popular special events conducted throughout the
year included: the South Windsor Community
Chorus and Band performances; our traditional/
annual Egg Hunt, co-sponsored by Imperial Oil
and the South Windsor Junior Women’s Club; the
Annual Fishing Derby, co-sponsored with the
Super Sixties Sportsmen Club; Winter
Wonderland, co-sponsored by local realtor Karen
O’Connor; Home for the Holidays decorating
contest; Cinema VMP; Summer Friday Night at
the Movies, & November Celebrate the Season
event partnered with Evergreen Walk; and the
ever-popular Rockville Bank Summer Concert
Series. Additionally, thousands enjoyed the use
of the Rotary Pavilion at Nevers Park with over
120 reservations over the 28 week rental season,
April – October. The Community Center
processed well over 2000 reservations, was
utilized by approximately 100 different individuals
and groups, 248 weekdays throughout the year,
with slightly over 260 weekend room rentals.
New programs initiated during Fiscal Year
2007/2008 included: Basketball Coaches
Training workshop presented by former Div. I
coach Jack Phelan; Princess Party; Pirate Party;
Nordic Walking; Youth Flag Football;
Skateboarding at TEMS; Home School Physical
Education; Berkshire East Ski/Snow Board Trips;
School Vacation Day Child Care Coverage and a
Charity Dodge Ball Tournament. Perhaps one of
our most ambitious programmatic undertaking in
department history was the 4 th R Before & After
School program. Operating at all five elementary
school sites from 7:00am to the start of school
and then again from dismissal to 6:00pm, we
accommodated nearly 120 students every day
each month of the school year. The successful
inaugural year would not have been possible
without the tremendous cooperation and
collaboration with the public school staff and
Superintendent’s office.
