Purpose and program areas<br />

The Asia Pacific Performance Exchange (APPEX) is an international residency program with a<br />

particu<strong>la</strong>r focus on American and Asian artists.<br />

APPEX is an educationally based international exchange artists residency program that supports<br />

cross-cultural and interdisciplinary understanding; develops rigorous strategies for art making<br />

reflecting the nuances of cultural differences; and fosters new ways <strong>to</strong> experiment, col<strong>la</strong>borate and<br />

interpret artistic expression.<br />

APPEX residency is made possible by The Ford Foundation, with additional support from the U.S.<br />

Department of State Bureau of Education & <strong>Cultural</strong> Affairs, the National Endowment for the Arts, The<br />

Ford Foundation Jakarta, The National Commission for Culture and Arts - Philippines, Japan<br />

Foundation, Soros Foundation, Saison Foundation, the Asian <strong>Cultural</strong> Council, Department of <strong>Cultural</strong><br />

Affairs, City of Los Angeles and ANA - Arts Network Asia.<br />

Who can receive a grant<br />

Contemporary artists of varying disciplines from America and throughout Asia including Bang<strong>la</strong>desh,<br />

Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Ma<strong>la</strong>ysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Vietnam.<br />

Grant size<br />

There is no minimum or maximum grant size. Funding is awarded based on project size.<br />

Recent grants<br />

APPEX 2010 Fellows:<br />

Agung Gunawan, Central Java. Gunawan graduated from the High School of Arts in<br />

Yogyakarta, and then trained in Javanese c<strong>la</strong>ssical dance in Surya Kencana and at the Kra<strong>to</strong>n<br />

(Pa<strong>la</strong>ce) where he currently performs.<br />

Ronnarong Khampha, Thai<strong>la</strong>nd. Khampha is a choreographer/dancer from Northern<br />

Thai<strong>la</strong>nd's Lanna region. He has developed his own performance style using traditional dance<br />

and contemporary aesthetics.<br />

Kamrul Baisah Bin Hussin, Ma<strong>la</strong>ysia. Kamrul is a native of Ke<strong>la</strong>ntan in Northeast Ma<strong>la</strong>ysia, an<br />

area renowned for its rich traditions of Ma<strong>la</strong>y performing arts and ritual healing. Hussin<br />

performs Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppetry), Ma<strong>la</strong>y percussion and is also a vocalist and<br />

teacher of Ma<strong>la</strong>ysian acapel<strong>la</strong> singing group<br />
