Who can receive a grant<br />
Grants are normally given <strong>to</strong> local organisations interested in testing new solutions, in learning from<br />
experience and in being agents of <strong>la</strong>sting change. These organisations must share the Foundation's<br />
and AKDN's goals in the fields of health, education, rural development and strengthening of civil<br />
society. If no established group exists, the Foundation occasionally creates new organisations <strong>to</strong><br />
tackle particu<strong>la</strong>rly important problems.<br />
Grant size<br />
The AKDN’s annual budget for non-profit development activities in 2010 was approximately US$ 625<br />
million.<br />
Examples of recent grants<br />
Summary of current programme activities:<br />
Afghanistan: Master-apprentice training centres in Kabul and Herat; music research and archiving in<br />
Herat and Badakhshan; outreach <strong>to</strong> schools, public recitals, instrument-making workshop.<br />
Kazakhstan: Nationwide implementation of “Murager” (Heritage) programme, a system for preserving<br />
and transmitting traditional performance and composition through mass education.<br />
Kyrgyzstan: Countrywide master-apprentice training programme; methodology development for<br />
national music education; creative youth <strong>la</strong>bora<strong>to</strong>ry for tradition-based musical innovation.<br />
Tajikistan: Academy of Maqom, elite training aimed at revitalizing Tajik c<strong>la</strong>ssical music; masterapprentice<br />
programme in all regions of Northern Tajikistan; instrument-making workshops.<br />
Pakistan: Pilot initiative for GBC (Gilgit-Baltistan-Chitral) <strong>to</strong> support master-apprentice training;<br />
regional music & arts festival in Hunza linked <strong>to</strong> recording, collecting & archiving; international<br />
presentations of indigenous music traditions of Northern Areas.<br />
Application procedure<br />
There are no formal application procedures. Before developing full proposals, enquiries should be<br />
made <strong>to</strong> the Foundation office in the country where the proposal originates or where the project would<br />
be executed. Please note that a precondition for funding is the existence of an office, in the same<br />
country, which can evaluate and moni<strong>to</strong>r projects we fund.<br />
Restrictions<br />
The Foundation is <strong>la</strong>rgely an implementing organisation rather than a grant-funding agency. Grants<br />

With few exceptions, the Foundation funds programmes in countries where it has offices and local<br />
professional staff <strong>to</strong> moni<strong>to</strong>r implementation (South and Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and the<br />
Middle East).<br />
