Purpose and program areas<br />
The Japan Foundation carries out programs and activities in the following three major categories:<br />
Arts and <strong>Cultural</strong> Exchange<br />
Japanese-Language Education Overseas<br />
Japanese Studies and Intellectual Exchange<br />
The purpose of these programs is <strong>to</strong> introduce Japanese culture and arts that deepen the<br />
understanding of Japan overseas, or, <strong>to</strong> support cultural activities that contribute <strong>to</strong> the preservation<br />
and res<strong>to</strong>ration of indigenous cultural traditions, or, <strong>to</strong> the building or res<strong>to</strong>ration of peace in postconflict<br />
or post-disaster areas.<br />
Funding sources<br />
The Japan Foundation is a special legal entity supervised by the Foreign Ministry <strong>to</strong> undertake<br />
international cultural exchange and was subsequently reorganized as an independent administrative<br />
institution in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 2003. Its financial base is 111 billion yen, invested by the government, and its<br />
operation is funded by investment profits, a subsidy from the government and private donations.<br />

Who can receive a grant<br />
Applicants must have the capabilities necessary for implementing the p<strong>la</strong>nned projects.<br />
When the applicants are organizations, applicants must not be commercial organizations.<br />
The receipt of grants or support from the Japan Foundation must not vio<strong>la</strong>te any <strong>la</strong>ws,<br />
regu<strong>la</strong>tions, or ordinances.<br />
When applicants are organizations, applicants must have a bank account in the organization's<br />
name in order <strong>to</strong> receive grant money from the Japan Foundation.<br />
