may incense <strong>the</strong> gifts placed upon <strong>the</strong><br />
altar and <strong>the</strong>n incense <strong>the</strong> cross and <strong>the</strong><br />
altar itself, so as to signify <strong>the</strong> Church’s<br />
<strong>of</strong>fering and prayer rising like incense in<br />
<strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> God. Next <strong>the</strong> priest,<br />
because <strong>of</strong> his sacred ministry, and <strong>the</strong><br />
people, by reason <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir baptismal<br />
dignity, may be incensed by <strong>the</strong> deacon<br />
or ano<strong>the</strong>r minister.<br />
76. The priest <strong>the</strong>n washes his hands at <strong>the</strong><br />
side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> altar, a rite that is an<br />
expression <strong>of</strong> his desire for interior<br />
purification.<br />
The Prayer over <strong>the</strong> Offerings<br />
77. Once <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ferings have been placed on<br />
<strong>the</strong> altar and <strong>the</strong> accompanying rites<br />
completed, <strong>the</strong> invitation to pray with <strong>the</strong><br />
priest and <strong>the</strong> Prayer over <strong>the</strong> Offerings<br />
conclude <strong>the</strong> Preparation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gifts<br />
and prepare for <strong>the</strong> Eucharistic Prayer.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> Mass, only one Prayer over <strong>the</strong><br />
Offerings is said, and it ends with <strong>the</strong><br />
shorter conclusion: Per Christum<br />
Dominum nostrum (Through Christ our<br />
Lord). If, however, <strong>the</strong> Son is<br />
mentioned at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> this prayer, <strong>the</strong><br />
conclusion is, Qui vivit et regnat in<br />
