For the election being held November 4th we need volunteers to help us educate and motivate our community. There are numerous ballot questions and we are asking for citizens to volunteer with the Customer-Involved Government Committee to help increase voter turnout. I am coordinating these efforts as the Chair of the Committee, along with my Vice Chair, Zen Belmond. As part of the Business Plan process, our City Commission met with staff and discussed the City’s response to the decrease in tax revenue due to property tax reform. We also discussed next year’s initiatives, including small business sustainability, foreclosures, and a sustainability index, among others. The City will hold two public budget hearings, which are scheduled for September 12 and 16 at 5:15 p.m. at City Hall.The property tax millage and assessment rates will be adopted at this time. There will be relatively modest increases in most user fees and the fire and solid waste assessment, reflecting the impact of inflation. For Fiscal Year 2009, some of the initiatives to be reviewed include, the creation of a Regional Emergency Communications Center, the City’s efforts to assist homeowners facing foreclosures, a comprehensive effort to support local businesses, and the numerous ecoconscious efforts the City is undertaking as part of its goal to “go green”.
