APS <strong>in</strong>terventions will vary depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> client’s circumstances, <strong>the</strong><br />
resources available with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community and <strong>the</strong> resources available<br />
with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> APS agency.<br />
Intervention 1<br />
(Vignette 211)<br />
Situation:<br />
The victim is an elderly woman with senile dementia whose husband<br />
and sole caregiver had just committed suicide by shoot<strong>in</strong>g himself <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir home. The victim was unable to care for herself. She did not<br />
know when to take her own medications and has no family <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area.<br />
Immediate response by APS was requested.<br />
Intervention:<br />
APS coord<strong>in</strong>ated with <strong>the</strong> victim’s friend for bio-hazard clean up. The<br />
victim was taken by APS for psychiatric and medical evaluation but<br />
was returned home by doctors. One <strong>of</strong> her relatives provided shortterm<br />
24-hour care. The victim was also referred to <strong>the</strong> Public<br />
Guardian’s <strong>of</strong>fice and was conserved. The victim was referred to <strong>the</strong><br />
Public Adm<strong>in</strong>istrator for her husband’s funeral arrangements. There<br />
were multiple guns <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> victim’s home that she threatened to use on<br />
herself and o<strong>the</strong>rs, so <strong>the</strong> guns were removed. The victim was referred<br />
to Meals on Wheels and provided an emergency response button.<br />
Intervention 2<br />

Situation:<br />
A 74 year old man was found by his caregiver after be<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> floor<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> home for two to three days. The paramedics were called. The<br />
victim was dehydrated and transported to <strong>the</strong> hospital.<br />
Intervention:<br />
APS conducted a case conference with <strong>the</strong> client and his home health<br />
care manager to discuss his <strong>in</strong>creased care needs and encourage<br />
consideration <strong>of</strong> assisted liv<strong>in</strong>g, to which he agreed. Note: APS had a<br />
prior report regard<strong>in</strong>g ano<strong>the</strong>r fall, but at that time <strong>the</strong> client refused to<br />
consider placement and was competent to make <strong>the</strong> decision. With <strong>the</strong><br />
client's consent, APS contacted family members who agreed to<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestigate appropriate placement and monitor his care. APS provided<br />
<strong>the</strong>m with referrals. Unfortunately, <strong>the</strong> client died <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hospital.<br />
