Intervention 3<br />
(Vignette 256)<br />
Situation:<br />
The 18 year old male victim is autistic, developmentally disabled, and<br />
psychotic. His caretaker parents do not obta<strong>in</strong> needed medication or mental<br />
and physical health services for him. They also leave him alone with relatives<br />
who had abused him as a child.<br />
Intervention:<br />
APS <strong>in</strong>terviewed <strong>the</strong> family and found that although <strong>the</strong> parents have<br />
difficulty cop<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong>ir son, <strong>the</strong>y were will<strong>in</strong>g to seek help. They were<br />
referred to <strong>the</strong> In-Home Supportive <strong>Services</strong> program, and to <strong>the</strong> local<br />
Regional Center for counsel<strong>in</strong>g services. APS followed up with <strong>the</strong> victim’s<br />
high school counselor and arranged for <strong>the</strong> parents to have a meet<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong><br />
son's physician. The case is be<strong>in</strong>g followed by an APS case manager.<br />
Intervention 4<br />

Situation:<br />
While an 81 year old woman was hospitalized for open heart surgery, her half<br />
bro<strong>the</strong>r got her to sign a power <strong>of</strong> attorney and a quit claim deed. He <strong>the</strong>n<br />
sold her house without her knowledge or consent. The police are unwill<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
press charges because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> attorney.<br />
Intervention:<br />
APS alerted <strong>the</strong> Real Estate Fraud Division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Consumer<br />
Affairs and has also contacted a legal service agency with <strong>the</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
pro-bono attorney assigned to handle <strong>the</strong> case as a civil proceed<strong>in</strong>g. The case<br />
rema<strong>in</strong>s under <strong>in</strong>vestigation.<br />
