Rhythm / Timing of Technique The timing of each phase of the stroke is important. Note that the paddling rhythm should be independent of stroke rate, so that if you accelerate you should still spend approximately 45% of the cycle applying the power phase. Synchronisation of paddling rhythm is crucial in team boats. If one paddler is still setting up the catch phase it is inefficient for the other paddler to start applying the power, even if it is only a split second ahead of his partner. 51
