acvatică al Institutului de Biologie. Am dat concurs
acolo şi am început să lucrez ca biochemist-biolog.
Eram într-un colectiv foarte bun, care făcea cercetare
de valoare şi susţinea pe tinerii cercetători. Puteam sa
citesc, să propun noi experimente. Mă bucuram să
lucrez ore în şir în laborator. Din păcate, institutul nu
avea dotările şi fondurile necesare pentru a face studii
de biologie moleculară. Atunci am început să consider
posibilitatea de a-mi continua educaţia şi
pregătirea ştiinţifică în Statele Unite ale Americii. Mi-a
fost greu să părasesc un colectiv cu care lucrasem
atât de bine, dar doream mult să mă specializez în
biochimie şi biologie moleculară.
Activitatea desfăşurată în străinătate
În august 1994 am fost admisă în programul de
doctorat la University of Missouri-Kansas City, unde
am primit o bursă pentru a putea trăi şi studia în SUA.
După un an, am început să lucrez efectiv la lucrarea
mea de doctorat studiind procesul de import al proteinelor
în mitocondrii. Dr. Ana Iriarte era coordonatoarea
mea de doctorat. Anii de studenţie au fost ani
în care am inceput să mă formez ca cercetător, am
învăţat să proiectez şi să fac experimente pentru a-mi
testa ipotezele, am învăţat să-mi prezint datele în public,
am avut discuţii ştiinţifice cu mulţi specialişti în
biochimie, biologie moleculară, genetică şi chimie fizi -
că, am participat la câteva conferinţe în domeniul meu
de studiu.
Când am absolvit, în 2001, am realizat că ar fi
bine să-mi continui pregătirea profesională. Doream
să studiez cauzele şi simptomele unor boli, cu scopul
final de a ajunge la metode de vindecare a lor. Am
început să lucrez în laboratorul Dr. Mike Sarras, la
University of Kansas Medical Center. Studiam modificările
induse de diabet în moleculele matricei
extracelulare în glomerulii rinichiului. În acelaşi timp
participam şi la alte proiecte care studiau rolul matricei
extracelulare în dezvoltarea embrionară. În perioada
pregătirii post-doctorale am lucrat cu embrioni de
peşte zebră ca model de studiu.
Prezentarea cauzei/motivului/
circumstanţelor care au stat la baza
luării deciziei de a revenii în ţară
După trei ani de studiu post-doctoral, când şeful
meu, Dr. Sarras se pregătea să-şi mute laboratorul
într-un alt stat, am început să consider dacă era timpul
să revin în ţara mea. Trecuseră deja mult mai mulţi
ani decât crezusem eu la început că voi petrece
departe de ţara mea. După zece ani petrecuţi în
această ţara frumoasă şi prietenoasă aveam mulţi prieteni
minunaţi. Mulţi dintre ei erau cercetători, ca şi
mine. Aşa că într-un fel a fost greu să plec şi să mă
reîntorc în ţara mea, unde încă nu ştiam dacă voi găsi
de lucru. Dar, cineva care mă iubeşte foarte mult şi
to ask questions, to try to introduce new experiments,
basically to do research. However, we did not have the
necessary funds and instruments for experiments at
molecular level. So I began to consider continuing my
education in the United States. The laboratory of
aquatic ecology, where I was working, was a very nice
place to work. The team members were very supportive
and knowledgeable in their field. But I had to leave
to learn more in biochemistry and molecular biology.
The research activity abroad
In August 1994 I was admitted in the Ph.D. program
at the University of Missouri-Kansas City where
I received a fellowship that allowed me to live and
study in the States. Within a year I began to study the
molecular mechanisms of protein import into mitochondria
under Dr. Ana Iriarte’s supervision. During
the years spent as a doctoral student I learned to
design and perform experiments to test my hypotheses,
I learned to present the results of my work orally,
I had wonderful scientific discussions with more senior
and younger scientists, and I participated to several
conferences in my field.
When I graduated, in 2001, I realized that I would
like to continue my training. My desire was to study
diseases, to understand their causes and their symptoms,
with the goal of being able to cure them finally. I
joined Dr. Mike Sarras’ laboratory at the Kansas
University Medical Center, where we looked at the diabetes-induced
changes in the extracellular matrix
components in kidney glomeruli. At the same time I
had the opportunity to collaborate in other research
projects that investigated the developmental role of
extracellular matrix molecules. During this training I
became familiar with the zebrafish study model.
Presentation of the causes/reasons/
circumstances which determined the
decision to return to your home country
After three years of post-doctoral training, when
my boss, Dr. Sarras, changed his lab location, I began
thinking of whether it is time for me to return to my
country. I had been in the States far longer than I
imagined when I first arrived in that beautiful and
friendly country. After ten years of living and working in
Kansas City, I had many wonderful friends, many of
them scientists. So, it was difficult to say good bye and
fly over the Atlantic to my country, where I did not even
have a job opportunity yet. But, someone who loves
me very much and knows my future told me it was
