care cunoaşte viitorul meu mi-a spus că era timpul să
mă reîntorc. Când eram studentă la University of
Missouri-Kansas City am primit pe Domnul Isus
Cristos ca Mântuitor şi Domn al meu. El m-a iubit atât
de mult încât i-a dat viaţă ca eu să trăiesc. Devenisem
creştină în 1994. De atunci am ştiut că viaţa mea, cariera
mea şi viitorul meu sunt importante pentru
Dumnezeu şi că El mă va indruma dacă eu îl voi
asculta. De aceea, în 2004, când mă gândeam la ce
hotărâre să iau, Dumnezeu mi-a arătat că era timpul
să mă reîntorc în ţară. Aşa că am revenit cu mult
entuziasm şi cu incredere că Dumnezeu mă va folosi
ca cercetător în România.
Relatarea succintă a începerii derulării
proiectului (sprijin acordat

După aproape un an de lucru ca voluntar, fără a fi
angajată, am avut ocazia, prin harul lui Dumnezeu, să
propun un proiect de cercetare pentru finanţare către
Ministerul Educaţiei şi Cercetării. Astfel, am fost şi
angajata la Institutul de Biochimie. Am început lucrul la
primul meu proiect. Voiam din totul sufletul să fac o
lucrare foarte bună.
În afara activităţii strict de cercetare am avut de
făcut şi multă muncă de administrare a proiectului. Mai
mult, neavând un technician sau măcar un laborant
harnic şi îndemânatic, am petrecut mult timp şi cu
activităţile de pregătire a experimentelor. Am învăţat
să ţin şi evidenţe contabile. Am căutat luni de zile,
citind zeci de rezumate, candidaţi pasionaţi şi cât de
cât pregătiţi pentru cercetare, pentru a lucra ca asistenţi
împreună cu mine. Au fost ani cu multe încercări,
dar prin ajutorul şi înţelepciunea lui Dumnezeu am
putut împlini obiectivele propuse. Mi-am dat seama că
dacă aş fi avut un ajutor minim din partea institutului
aş fi investit mai mult timp şi mai multă energie în
activităţi pur ştiinţifice şi de pregătire profesională.
În ciuda acestor dificultăţi, colaboratorii mei şi cu
mine am reuşit să instalăm un mic laborator în care să
lucrăm cu peşti zebră şi în care să aplicăm metode
care nu mai fuseseră aplicate în ţară pâna atunci.
Dorinţa mea era ca să continui proiectul început şi să
pregătesc şi alţi tineri în domeniile în care mă specializasem
şi eu.
Cred că în cercetarea biologică este nevoie de
proiecte care să conţină obiective de lungă durată, şi
este bine ca un cercetător să aibă o viziune pentru cel
puţin 5 ani in viitor. Am fost uimită şi foarte rănită când
directorul institutului şi un alt cercetător, pe care îl
respect foarte mult, m-au împiedicat să-mi continui
lucrul şi să depun o nouă propunere spre finanţare.
Cred că aceasta a fost cea mai mare dificultate întâlnită
până acum de la revenirea mea în ţară.
time to return. While I was a student at UMKC, I
received the grace to believe in my Savior and God,
the Lord Jesus Christ, who loved me and gave His life
for me. One day in Fall 1994 I became a Christian.
Since then, I knew that my life, my career, and my
future matter very much to God and that He will lead
me if I would listen to Him. Therefore, in 2004, when I
was considering my options, God showed me that it
was time to return home. I returned with great enthusiasm
and great expectations that I would see God
using me as a scientist in my country.
Brief presentation of the project

After almost a year of working as a volunteer scientist,
by the grace of God I submitted my project to
the Ministry of Education and Research, and I
received funding to do research in my country! Thus, I
was employed at the Institute of Biochemistry of the
Romanian Academy in Bucharest. I began my work
with enthusiasm, decided to do everything with excellence.
I realized soon that I would need to dedicate
much of my time to things that other researchers did
not have to. This was challenging due to reasons
which I will detail further. First of all, I needed to learn
to keep copies of all the invoices and keep a good balance
of the expenses, because the accounting department
of the institute was overwhelmed by other duties
and did not have time to help me out. It was not difficult,
but it was time consuming. I had to set up a new
laboratory facility and to purchase all the things
required in a lab. I had to search for months, reading
tens of CVs, for suitable candidates whom I could hire
to work with me on the project. Since the institute did
not offer the help of any technician, I needed to do that
job as well during the implementation of my reintegration
project. It has been challenging, but with God’s
strength and guidance I managed to accomplish what
I planned to. This management without the minimum
help from my host institution required more time and
energy, which otherwise would have been channeled
to more scientific and professional training activities.
In spite of these difficulties, my collaborators and I
were able to set up a small laboratory at the institute
and introduce several new techniques and study models
that were not available in Romania. I intended to
continue the research begun with this project,
because I think that without long term goals, for fiveten
years, one cannot really conduct good research
especially in biology. I was shocked and very hurt
when the director of the institute and another
researcher whom I respect very much hindered me to
pursue my work and to apply for new funding. This, I
think, is the greatest difficulty I have encountered so far.
